Fatal Incident During Warrant Service In Fort Gratiot Township

A 55 year old man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday as St. Clair County Sheriff's deputies attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a residence on Carrigan Road.
Deputies arrived at the home around 12:30 p.m. to execute a warrant for criminal sexual conduct. As officers approached, they heard a single gunshot from inside. Upon entering, they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound and attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead.
During a search of the property, authorities discovered what appeared to be an explosive device. Law enforcement evacuated nearby homes as a precaution and requested assistance from the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad. The device was later determined to be a realistic prop with no actual explosives present.
The man was alone in the residence, and no other injuries were reported.
The incident remains under investigation with assistance from Michigan State Police.
