January marks National Train Your Dog Month, and local shelters and trainers in Saginaw are urging new pet owners to prioritize training and patience after holiday adoptions. December is typically one of the busiest months for dog adoptions, but shelters often see an increase in returns in January when new owners feel overwhelmed.
To reduce surrenders and promote lasting placements, Saginaw County Animal Care and Control has partnered with Unleashed Dog Training and Paws & Beyond to provide adopters with training resources and guidance. Trainers emphasize routine, predictability, and positive reinforcement to help dogs adjust to new environments.
Experts also encourage patience during the adjustment period, highlighting the "3-3-3 rule": three days to decompress, three weeks to learn routines, and three months to fully settle in. Shelter officials say ongoing support after adoption is key to ensuring long-term success and a healthy bond between dogs and their families.
