Besides the Worth Township Board of Trustees being upset at the financial situation the township is facing, residents are also demanding action be taken.
During a routine audit in 2025, several financial inconsistencies were discovered that resulted in the township owing penalties, fines, and interest because of alleged “gross negligence” of the township’s Clerk Jennifer Marshall and Treasurer Jennifer Woodruff.
It is estimated the township owes about $90,000 to the state and federal government.
Because the clerk’s and treasurer’s positions are both bonded, the township could recoup most of that money.
If that cannot be done, the funds could be recouped with court action. Also, information has been turned over to the Michigan State Police for possible criminal charges.
To help correct the situation, the board approved additional safeguards by adding cameras, having a sheriff’s deputy escort the treasurer when making bank deposits, hiring a state certified accounting firm to oversee bookkeeping practices, and doing a quarterly review of finances.
The reviews will be done at 10 a.m. on the first Thursday of the month following a budget meeting. The first one will be done on April 2.
In addition, the board and several citizens have called for the two to resign.
The board will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18.
