Lapeer County Sheriff Scott McKenna has asked county commissioners to allow his department to buy 24 Flock cameras and systems.
While McKenna views his request as a matter of public safety, others see it as another infringement on privacy.
Flock cameras are used by law enforcement agencies as another tool in helping to fight crime and more.
The cameras can read license-plates which help identify vehicles involved in crimes and stolen vehicles.
The cameras can also help in locating missing people.
Flock cameras capture images of license plates and vehicle characteristics, which helps authorities to search and share alerts in real time for public safety.
There was some pushback from audience members during the Jan. 8 county meeting when the cameras were being discussed.
Those who spoke were concerned about surveillance, unauthorized surveillance, how the information gathered will be used, and who will have access to the information.
McKenna along with a Flock camera representative are expected to speak during the board of commissioners' 9 a.m., meeting on Thursday, Jan. 22.
If McKenna's request for the cameras is approved, the initial cost for 24 is about $105,000.
The Metamora Township Police Police is currently using the Flock camera system.
