State Representative Matthew Bierlein, of Vassar, announced his candidacy for the Michigan State Senate in the 26th District.
Bierlein, a republican, has served as chair of the state house's Oversight Committee on Public Health and Food Security, and Vice Chair of the Oversight Committee.
He is also a member of the Health Policy Committee and the Oversight Committee on Corporate Subsidies and State Investments.
Before entering state politics, he served as a Tuscola County Commissioner.
The 26th Senate District includes communities across parts of Genesee, Lapeer, Saginaw, and Tuscola Counties, which is much of the same area that Bierlein covered in his role as representative for Michigan's 97th District.
The seat Bierlein is seeking in the senate seat is currently held by Republican Senator Kevin Daley of Lapeer County.
Daley cannot run for office again because he is term-limited.
