After navigating all of the red tape, the Imlay City Police Department can now use a Homeland Security Grant to purchase a drone.

The cost of the drone and related equipment to operate it will cost $24,885.

The police department will use the drone for search and rescue missions, traffic crash investigations, and to assist at fire incidents and EMS operations.

The drone, which will have video capturing abilities, will also have thermal imaging that can be used to detect hotspots in structure fires and for locating victims.

The department has two officers who are certified by the Federal Aviation Agency to operate drones.
