Thousands of Michigan families are receiving help with child care expenses, according to a newly released state report highlighting expanded early education programs.
The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential says more than 50,000 children and families have accessed low-cost or free child care through the state's Child Development and Care Scholarship program.
The report also shows more than 66,500 four year olds participating in Michigan's Pre-K for All initiative, which the state estimates saves families $14,000 annually in child care expenses.
Meanwhile, Michigan's Tri-Share program, which divides child care costs among employers, employees, and the state, has helped participating families save more than $17 million since 2021.
More than 300 employers are involved in that program, which was recently made permanent under state law.
Officials say additional investments are focused on strengthening the child care workforce and improving early childhood literacy.
