Michigan's unemployment rate held steady in September, but new state figures show fewer residents working and a shrinking labor force.
According to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, the state's jobless rate remained at five percent, unchanged from August.
However, employment dropped by 27,000 people during the month, while Michigan's labor force declined by 26,000.
The state's unemployment rate also remained above the national average of 4.2%.
A separate survey of employers showed Michigan businesses and government agencies eliminated a net 6,000 payroll jobs in September, with private education and healthcare services accounting for 4,000 of those losses.
Construction and manufacturing each added approximately 1,000 jobs.
Meanwhile, the Detroit metropolitan area's unemployment rate edged higher to 5.5%.
State labor officials say Michigan's job market has cooled, particularly in professional and business services.
Despite September's decline, statewide payroll employment remained about 2,000 jobs above its level one year earlier.
