Anyone planning to bring firewood into Michigan next year will face new restrictions aimed at protecting the state's forests from invasive insects and diseases.
Beginning January 1st, 2027, untreated firewood will be prohibited from entering Michigan under a new state quarantine.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says firewood can carry more than 140 different plant pests and diseases, including insects capable of causing widespread tree damage.
Under the new rules, firewood brought across state lines must be certified as heat-treated, with its internal temperature reaching at least 140 degrees for 60 consecutive minutes.
Officials recommend purchasing firewood near where it will be burned rather than transporting it long distances.
The restrictions apply to wood entering Michigan from other states, and violations could result in fines of up to $10,000.
Additional information is available through Michigan's invasive species website.
