A phone call promising unpaid unemployment benefits could end up costing Michigan residents money.
The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency is using October's Cybersecurity Awareness Month to remind workers and businesses to watch for fraud.
The warning follows reports of scammers calling residents and claiming they can release unpaid unemployment benefits for a fee.
Agency officials say that's a red flag. The state never charges people to release benefits or demands payment to access unemployment money.
Director Jason Palmer says protecting personal information requires year-round attention.
Residents are encouraged to avoid suspicious messages, use strong passwords, and check their unemployment accounts for unusual activity.
Anyone receiving questionable calls, emails, or texts should verify the information directly through their state unemployment account rather than responding to the message.
Suspected fraud or identity theft can be reported at Michigan.gov/UIA.
