What started as a favor between friends has turned into a legal standoff that's left a mid-Michigan homeowner locked out of her own house.
A Vassar woman says she agreed last fall to let her daughter's friends park a converted school bus on her property for what was supposed to be six weeks. That was four months ago.
Now, she says she's the one who can't go home.
The homeowner took steps to evict the couple living in the bus. But after filing for eviction, the bus occupants petitioned for - and received - a personal protection order against her. That order bars her from approaching the bus - which sits on her property. As a result, she says she's been forced to stay elsewhere while the case moves through court.
The couple claims they had written permission to stay.
Meanwhile, the City of Vassar confirms the bus violates local ordinances, including rules against living in a commercial vehicle in a residential area. Police say mechanical problems have reportedly prevented the bus from being moved.
But there's another complication: time. Authorities say the extended stay, along with mail being delivered to the property, may have allowed the bus occupants to establish residency - shifting the situation from trespassing to a formal eviction matter.
City officials say they're working to set a timeline for repairs and removal, urging both sides to be patient while legal proceedings continue.
For now, there's no confirmed date for when the bus - or the dispute - will move.
