If you're checking your bank account daily for that state tax refund, Michigan officials say you may need to give it a little more time.

The Michigan Department of Treasury reports it has already processed more than 1.1 million individual returns since tax season opened January 26th, sending out roughly $565 million in refunds. But the rush isn't slowing down. Another half-million returns are still in line to be reviewed.

So far, the state has received about 1.6 million returns - a 45% jump compared to this point last year.

Treasury officials say early filers often claim multiple tax credits, which can make returns more complicated and slower to process. Deputy State Treasurer Kavita Kale says most refunds are expected to land within four to six weeks, but returns requiring extra verification could take longer.

Adding to the mix this year: a brand-new processing system aimed at boosting security and accuracy. Some taxpayers may receive letters asking them to confirm their identity before their refund is released - part of an added fraud-prevention effort.

State officials are asking residents to double-check their returns before filing and to remain patient as crews work through what they're calling an unusually busy stretch of tax season.
