For some Michigan college students, the biggest obstacle to earning a degree isn't the classroom - it's finding enough money for food, housing, and other everyday necessities.

Now, Michigan's Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential, known as MiLEAP, has secured nearly five million dollars in federal funding to address those challenges.

The four year grant was the largest of three awarded nationwide through a federal student basic-needs program.

A state task force previously found that 20% of Michigan undergraduates experienced low or very low food security, while 44% of surveyed community college students reported housing insecurity.

The funding will help colleges connect students with food assistance, health coverage, housing resources, and other available support.

State officials say the goal is simple: remove financial barriers that can prevent students from finishing their education.
