The Sandusky Community School District will have a full-time resource officer in the school when classes start up again in January 2026 after Winter break.
Matt Washe was selected to be the resource officer for the school district. He joined the Sandusky Police Department earlier this month. He is in the process of taking the training needed to be a resource officer.
Before applying to be the department's resource officer, Washe worked for about four years as a deputy for the Sanilac County Sheriff's Department.
In his position at the school, he will work about 180 days when school is in session. The rest of the time he will work as an officer in the city's police department.
The school district will pay for Washe's service out of its current funding because the district's board of education followed the recommendation of Superintendent Kurt Dennis not to opt in to receive the 31aa categorical funding in its current legislative language form.
The district turned down the 31aa funding of $125 per student because of the wording that comes with accepting the funding that has possible ramifications of liability.
Some school district's across the state have filed lawsuits regarding the language in 31aa.
Hopes are that lawmakers will make adjustments to remove the wording in the sections that districts' have reservations about.
