A Huron County sheriff's deputy arrested a 53 year old Minden City man on suspicion of operating while intoxicated after a sport-utility vehicle was found in a ditch at a rural intersection near Forestville on the night of December 16th.
Deputies were sent to the scene around 7:45 p.m. for a traffic complaint reporting a white SUV off the roadway with two occupants but no injuries. The deputy reported finding a woman in the driver's seat and a man lying in the ditch, who appeared confused, smelled strongly of intoxicants and nearly fell back into the ditch after being helped out.
According to the report, the woman told the deputy the man had been driving earlier when the SUV went into the ditch about 15 to 20 minutes before law enforcement arrived and that they had switched seats afterward. The man later told the deputy he had consumed four or five beers, agreed to field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment during the walk and turn and one leg stand exercises, which the deputy stopped for safety reasons.
The report states the man was taken into custody for operating while intoxicated at about 8:04 p.m., then transported to a hospital where two blood samples were drawn for alcohol testing before he was lodged in the county jail.
A citation for operating while intoxicated was issued, and the SUV was towed from the ditch; no damage was noted to the vehicle.
