During Monday's Cass City Village meeting, the council rezone several properties that are located throughout the village. The zoning changes were done to create more housing.
The zoning of most of those properties were changed to be Single-Family Residential or to Multi-Family Residential.
There were also a few properties zoned for business.
When Village Manager Debbie Powell attended a Small Town and Rural Development Conference in 2023, she learned about the lack of housing in the state. At that time, it was estimated there was at least a 190,000 housing unit deficit, and that need has continued to grow.
Since then, Cass City has steadily worked on developing more housing.
One of the steps the village has taken towards that was approving an ordinance that would allow housing development in the back of some downtown businesses.
The village is pursuing a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and funding from the Michigan State Housing Authority (MSHDA) to be used for housing.
