Hemlock Public School District celebrated the completion of its new gymnasium at the high school with a December 12 ribbon cutting event attended by school board members, athletic boosters, and community members.
The facility, called the Legend Gymnasium, opens to students and staff immediately, though construction teams will continue work on finishing touches and an accompanying walking track in the coming weeks.
Superintendent Don Killingbeck characterized the project as a significant achievement for the district, crediting voters who approved a 2022 bond measure that funded the construction without raising taxes. He framed the gymnasium as proof that smaller communities can create meaningful opportunities for young people.
The ceremony included recognition of two notable Hemlock athletes: James Wisley, who earned an All-Sport Award in 1957, and John Mulvaney, a 1968 graduate inducted into the athletic hall of fame last year.
District officials stated the new space aims to enhance both student programming and community engagement while maintaining the school's focus on academics and fiscal responsibility.
The Saginaw County district plans to announce when the walking track becomes available for public use.
