The Huron County Hockey Association (HCHA) officially broke ground on its long-anticipated new ice arena on December 18th, 2025. The ceremony marks the start of a multi-phase development designed to modernize local recreational facilities and provide a year-round hub for the community.
HCHA leadership extended formal gratitude to Mayor Kathleen Particka and City Manager Becky Bachman for their collaborative efforts in moving the project forward. The new facility, located at 216 South Hanselman St. (near the city splash pad), replaces the aging Huron County Expo Center, which the association had outgrown after more than 30 years of use.
The new arena is designed to meet official USA Hockey and Michigan Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) standards, ensuring local teams like the "Barn Burners" can host regulation-tier tournaments.
The first phase of the project is estimated to cost $4 million. This initial stage focuses on establishing a functional ice surface and essential facilities to allow for occupancy by the late 2026 hockey season.
Beyond hockey and figure skating, the 3.5 acre site is intended to host car shows, community markets, and various public events during the off season.
The project was kickstarted by a significant contribution from Agri-Valley Communications Inc., alongside support from city land sales and community donations.
City Manager Becky Bachman and Mayor Particka have emphasized that the arena is a "shared vision" between city leadership and local families. By providing a dedicated space for youth athletics and community gatherings, the project aims to strengthen the local economy and improve the quality of life for residents across Huron County.
