John Ruthowski, who is the Bingham Township Cemetery Sexton, wants to honor three Civil War Veterans with markers noting their service to our country.
However, the Veteran Affairs Department denied Ruthowski's request for special markers for three veterans who fought in that long ago war that are buried in Valley Cemetery.
Because of that, the Bingham Township Board of Trustees approved purchasing plaques for the veterans at a cost of $35 each.
There were several men from Michigan who fought in that conflict that sought to divide the United States.
After the attack on Fort Sumter, Michigan was among the states that responded to President Lincoln's call for volunteers.
Michigan provided a significant number of men who served in the infantry, cavalry as well as colored regiments for the Union.
