Several times over the last few months, the Marlette City Council has discussed the pros and cons of allowing the development of marijuana businesses, but no decision was made until this month.
The decision regarding marijuana businesses will be made by city residents in an election next year, which was what the city's legal counsel suggested.
The issue of marijuana businesses operating in the city will be placed on the Aug. 4, 2026, election ballot if enough signatures are collected to take the issue to a vote. The ballot wording is expected to say the city of Marlette ordains that no marijuana establishments, as defined by the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act, are permitted within the boundaries of the City.
If the August ballot proposal passes, existing marijuana businesses would be allowed to continue to operate.
The council previously approved a zoning ordinance that would allow marijuana businesses in the areas that are industrial-zoned. There is an existing medical grow facility located on Karen Street, but no additional licenses for adult-use growers or dispensaries would be issued.
However, if the petition fails, the council would adopt a regulatory ordinance that would specify how many recreational marijuana businesses could operate, along with other operational conditions, standards, and requirements.
