A contentious debate over renewable energy zoning took center stage, as commissioners approved a new text amendment for utility-scale solar and battery storage systems. The amendment introduces a "Host Community Agreement," requiring developers to pay the county $2,000 per megawatt. However, the decision was met with strong public opposition, including accusations of officials disregarding the county's master plan and violating the Michigan Constitution. One resident even threatened legal action, while commissioners acknowledged the state's significant influence on local zoning decisions.
In other news, a vital local service which delivers meals to seniors, is now facing potential probation. Region 7, the oversight agency, reported significant concerns with the provider's financial processes and documentation following a recent audit. While the quality of the food was praised, they have 60 days to rectify these compliance issues, or it could face heightened oversight and a halt on new enrollments, potentially impacting senior services.
On a related note, several residents passionately appealed to the board to increase the senior millage. Speakers emphasized the critical need for funding to maintain senior programs, highlighting their role in providing essential socialization and combating isolation. Calls were made to place the millage increase on the ballot for voters to decide.
Finally, the board approved the annual submission for Huron Behavioral Health, noting a positive trend of decreasing suicide rates attributed to county funding.
New appointments were also made to the Economic Development Corporation board, contingent on background checks, aiming to address ongoing quorum challenges.
The conditional appointments are Becky Bachman, Kevin Mazure and Clark Ramsey.
