Brian Jeffrey Hillis, 57, of Yale is facing charges for the alleged hit-and-run of a Melvin woman on Aug. 22.
Hillis is charged with one count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death, a felony with a maximum five years in prison and/or $5,000 fine, and one count of failure to stop at the scene of a personal injury accident, which is a misdemeanor with a maximum one year in jail and/or $1,000 fine.
His bond was set at $10,000, which he was able to post. He is scheduled for trial on March 5, 2026 in Sanilac County Circuit Court.
The case against Hillis dates back to Aug. 22 when a 30-year-old Melvin woman had been struck by a motor vehicle on Melvin Road near Railroad Street when she was walking.
The driver of the vehicle did not stop to render aid and fled the scene.
The female victim lay in the ditch on the side of Melvin Road until regaining consciousness and walking about a quarter mile home, according to a sheriff's office press release at the time. She was treated for her injuries at a hospital.
Hillis was later identified as the suspected driver after requests were made for the public’s help in locating a 2020 - 2026 GMC Sierra or Chevrolet Silverado with front right and right-side damage and missing the passenger side mirror.
