An emergency adoption event at Genesee County Animal Control helped free up space this weekend after dozens of animals were rescued from unsafe conditions in Flint Township.
Authorities removed 61 dogs and three cats from a home following a police search warrant last week. Shelter officials say taking in that many animals at once is unusual and created an urgent need for space.
During Saturday's four-hour adoption event, fees were reduced to $10, plus a $10 license for county residents. The response was strong, with a line forming before doors opened. By the end of the event, between 10 and 15 dogs and about 10 cats had been adopted.
Not all of the recently seized animals are available for adoption, but the shelter continues working to place animals in permanent homes. Officials say they are also seeking volunteers and foster families to help manage capacity and ensure they can continue accepting animals in need.
