Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced an update on a multistate settlement involving Hyundai and Kia aimed at strengthening consumer protections and providing restitution to affected residents.
Hyundai and Kia Anti-Theft Settlement
Nessel also announced a multistate settlement with Hyundai and Kia over the sale of vehicles lacking industry-standard anti-theft technology, a shortcoming linked to widespread vehicle thefts nationwide. Under the settlement, the automakers will install engine immobilizer technology in all future U.S. vehicles, provide free zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder protectors to owners of eligible vehicles, offer up to $4.5 million in consumer restitution for theft-related damages, and pay $4.5 million to states to offset investigation costs.
Eligible vehicle owners have one year from notice to schedule free installation of the hardware fix at authorized dealerships. Consumers who experienced thefts or attempted thefts after April 29, 2025, may also be eligible for restitution. The settlement was led by Connecticut, Minnesota, and New Hampshire and joined by Michigan and dozens of other states.
