Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced an update on a multistate settlement involving Menards aimed at strengthening consumer protections and providing restitution to affected residents.
Menards Settlement Over Rebate Advertising and Price Gouging
Attorney General Nessel secured a $4.25 million multistate settlement with Menard Inc. resolving allegations of deceptive advertising tied to its "11% Rebate Program" and price gouging during the COVID-19 pandemic. Investigators found the company's marketing practices misled consumers by presenting rebates as point-of-sale discounts, failing to clearly disclose program limitations, and misrepresenting its rebate administrator.
Under the agreement, Menards must revise its advertising practices, clearly disclose rebate terms, allow at least one year to submit rebate claims, improve rebate tracking transparency, disclose its relationship with Rebates International, and refrain from price gouging during periods of economic disruption. The settlement includes $637,641.06 for Michigan. The agreement was co-led by Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa, with several other states participating.
