The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) has issued a new Workplace Mental Health and Well-Being report, highlighting how job conditions directly influence both physical and mental health. The study underscores the heavy toll of chronic stress on workers and the broader economic costs for employers.
LEO Director Susan Corbin noted that prioritizing mental health benefits everyone: employees feel healthier and more engaged, while businesses see gains in productivity and reduced absenteeism.
Key findings include:
- Work is a major social determinant of health, shaping life outcomes across generations.
- Organizational culture and policies can be adjusted to improve employee well-being.
- Chronic stress alters brain function, affecting cognition and emotional regulation.
- A healthy workforce is vital for Michigan's economic growth.
Deputy Director Sean Egan emphasized that employment conditions are closely tied to overall quality of life, and improving them requires collaboration among workers, employers, policymakers, and researchers.
The report, curated by epidemiologist Lisbeth Iglesias and Egan, builds on Michigan's first workplace mental health study from 2022 and continues to guide statewide efforts to foster safer, more resilient workplaces.
