Michigan Chief Medical Executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian has issued a standing recommendation advising health care providers to follow the child and adolescent immunization schedules from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) or the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

Bagdasarian said the move aligns Michigan with several other states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, and California, that have formally adopted national medical organizations' immunization schedules as standards of care. The recommendation, made in consultation with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Division of Immunization, emphasizes evidence-based vaccination practices and aims to improve access to recommended vaccines across the state.

Michigan's new guidance departs from the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) schedule, which the state is not required to follow. Bagdasarian said vaccines remain vital to disease prevention and public health, noting the AAP and AAFP schedules are "well-evidenced and based on rigorous review."

The Michigan chapters of the AAP and AAFP, along with leaders from the state's Children's Hospital Collaborative, voiced strong support for the recommendation, particularly in maintaining the hepatitis B birth dose and other early childhood immunizations.

Additional information is available on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Immunization Recommendations webpage.
