Pinesap Solar Project Application Approved In Planning Commission Meeting Thursday

The proposed Pine Sap Solar project in Huron County has cleared a major hurdle.
The Huron County Planning Commission approved Ranger Power's special land-use application for the project on a 5-to-2 vote following an extensive public hearing.
Commissioner Adam Hunt was not present, while Commissioner Deb Knarian did not vote because of a conflict of interest. The meeting record shows a potential conflict was disclosed and discussed before consideration of the project.
Pine Sap is a proposed 150-megawatt utility-scale solar development in Rubicon Township. County officials previously described the proposal as covering 27 parcels totaling nearly 1,587 acres.
The project has generated significant debate. During the hearing, opponents raised concerns involving farmland preservation, the county master plan, project requirements and the long-term effect of large-scale solar development. Supporters have emphasized private property rights and the economic benefits for participating landowners.
Ranger Power submitted its application in May, before Huron County enacted a temporary moratorium on new solar and battery-storage projects. County legal counsel advised officials that the Pine Sap application could continue through the review process despite that moratorium.
