Biography

Larry William Jewell, age 75, of Harbor Beach, passed away on November 14, 2022, at home with his family by his side, after a difficult battle with cancer. Larry was born to Roy and Ruth Jewell on October 2, 1947 in Harbor Beach. Larry attended Harbor Beach High School and was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. Larry wed Rita Elizabeth LeGue on June 24, 1967. While Larry's family and friends are saddened by his death, they are extremely thankful for his life. Larry was a quiet soul who relished the simple pleasures of living. He was a loving father and dedicated husband. Larry was predeceased by his mother and father Ruth and Roy; Step-father Henry Shliefer; three infant sons: Lawrence, Roy and Mark, and several aunts and uncles Larry was passionate about music and could often be found lending his beautiful voice or artful guitar to one of several bands he worked with during his lifetime. When he wasn't playing or singing, he worked on vehicles with his sons, cruising the marina and beaches, or feeding and trying to tame any stray animal he came across. He also loved going on road trips with his bride and working on their yard and garden.

Biography

Arlene H. Anderson, 94, of Grant Township near Elkton, passed away Sunday, November 13, 2022 surrounded by family. Arlene was born September 1, 1928 in Oliver Twp to the late Herbert and Velma (Haley) Huff. She resided in Grant Twp most of her life. On November 14, 1952 she married Robert M. Anderson of Oliver Twp at the Baptist Parsonage in Harbor Beach. After celebrating 63 years of marriage, Robert preceded her in death on July 8, 2016. In the mid 1950's they worked together running their mink farm and raising their family. By 1960, their mink farm was a full-time business. The fur industry peaked in 1973, so they sold the mink and started a new business, Tri-County Dead Stock Removal. She handled all the accounting, payroll and office management of the business. Arlene enjoyed playing the dulcimer, crocheting, canning and antiques. She was an avid reader up to her final days. Education was very important to her, and she saw to it that her children all received a college education.

Biography

Peter Burns Capling, 88 years old of Bad Axe, passed away on November 13, 2022 at his home. Peter was born in Bad Axe on July 28, 1934 to the late Phillip and Lenore (Burns) Capling . After graduating high school, at the age of 17, Pete joined the Navy and spent four years repairing airplanes and playing on the Navy traveling basketball team. Peter and Sue Bearss were married on December 29, 1962 and were married for 58 years before she passed away in July of 2021. After he left the Navy, Pete graduated from Michigan State University and obtained his law degree from the Detroit College of Law. Pete settled his family in Birmingham, Michigan and began his law career for the Wayne County Road Commission. After the Detroit riots, he moved his family to Bad Axe. After a twelve year career as Prosecuting Attorney in Huron County, he opened a private practice as a trial attorney, and served ten years as the District Court Magistrate, and also on the case evaluation panels. Pete really enjoyed the many marriage ceremonies he performed and took pride in making the ceremony very special for each couple. Pete was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church in Bad Axe, dedicated member to Verona Hills Golf Club, 50 year member of Bad Axe Rotarian club, 50 year member of the American Legion Post 0499, and original founding member in 1976 of the Detroit Irish American Lawyers Association. Many knew Pete for his many miles walking around town with his dog. He enjoyed spending time at his cottage up north in Clear Lake with his family, golfing, cross word puzzles and was an enthusiastic ice fisherman. He was a regular at the annual event of the Irish American lawyers’ brunch in Corktown. Mr. Capling was a fierce advocate for the less fortunate litigants that he represented in court. He was a very highly respected lawyer and friend.

Biography

BERNICE M. KLOSKA, age 96 of Harbor Beach, went home to be with her husband on November 11, 2022 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living of Bad Axe, with her family by her side, under hospice care. She was born on January 10, 1926 in Harbor Beach to the late Robert and Lottie (Minard) Wood. She attended Harbor Beach Community School. She married Arthur Kloska on June 5, 1943. They had lived all their married life on Schock Road. Art preceded her in death in 1988. Bernice spent her life raising their five children and farming. She loved baking cakes and making blankets for the grandchildren. She did genealogy for the Wood and Kloska families. Bernice also spent 16 winters in Arizona with her sister Ruth.

Ruth Minnie Clark 92 years old of Elkton passed away at home on November 10, 2022. Our loving mother Ruth Minnie Klemp was born on April 4, 1930 to the late William and Minnie (Jahn) Klemp, and raised in the Port Hope area with her 10 siblings. She worked at the Port Hope Level factory and then the seat belt factory in Bad Axe. She enjoyed working in the factories and making friends. As her family grew she became a stay at home mom taking care of her eight sons along with helping her husband on the family farm. Ruth also helped raise most of her grandchildren and many of her great grandchildren, and really enjoyed loving them and spending special time with them. Ruth enjoyed gardening, canning, her flowers and embroidery work. Ruth had a very strong faith in God and was a very active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Kinde. She had a great sense of humor and was Beloved by everyone she met.

Sharon was born October 23, 1942 in Bad Axe to the late Berthold and Elsie (Forster) Posade. She was a member at Trinity Lutheran in Elkton until the church closed and she then transferred to St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Berne. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Robert M. Bedford, 89, of Pigeon, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw. Bob was born June 13, 1933 in Bad Axe to the late Walter and Olive (Eicher) Bedford. He graduated from Elkton High School in 1951. On December 11, 1954 he married Esther Block at the Kilmanagh EUB Church; she preceded him in death November 23, 2020. In 1971 he moved to Marion, Indiana and worked at Active Industries before returning to Huron County in 1996. He was a member of Pigeon River Mennonite Church. He enjoyed listening to Southern Gospel music and traveling by motorhome to visit his grandchildren.

He grew up in Pikeville, Kentucky and moved to Michigan in 1994. He worked at UPS, Heavy Freight in Romulus from 1995 until retiring in 2017. After retiring he moved from Inkster to Caseville. He was a member of the Caseville Eagles Club. He enjoyed spending winters in Leesburg, Florida, traveling in his camper and going on cruises.

Carol A. Baumeister, age 87, of Deckerville, died Monday November 7, 2022, in McLaren Port Huron Hospital. She was born September 7, 1935, in Saginaw, the daughter of Rev. Leslie and Arabelle (O’Blenis) Cullver. She grew up in Caseville and Carsonville. Graduating from Carsonville High School. On October 1, 1955, she married Donald Baumeister in Deckerville. He preceded her in death on February 7, 1992. Carol worked for the Deckerville Community Hospital for 15 years as the lobby receptionist. She also was very active on the family farm east of Deckerville. She enjoyed sewing, playing the piano, painting, and gardening. She was a member of the Deckerville United Methodist Church, the UMW, hospital auxiliary, and the Deckerville Community School Band Boosters.

Sharon Marie Wahl, 81, of Port Austin, died at her home on Monday, November 7, 2022. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 16, 1941, the daughter of Lawrence and Lillian (Stapanski) Kanarek. Sharon moved to the Port Austin area from Warren in 1969. She enjoyed baking, especially birthday cakes, Puzzles, reading books, taking care of, and feeding her family, she also loved to listen to all music. Sharon is survived by her children: Fred (Shelley) Baranski of Port Austin, Robert (Janice) Baranski of Bad Axe, Gerald Jr (Suzie) Baranski of Port Austin, and Julie (Michael) Ressler of St. Clair Shores. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Chaning Baranski, Casey Baranski, Kayla (James) Lemanski, Adam (Megan) Baranski, Elizabeth Baranski, Ian and Lillian Ressler; and her great grandchildren: Annie, Anthony, Sophia, Emily and Hannah.

She graduated in 1964 from Laker High School. On July 23, 1964 she married Kinsey Hazard at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Linkville. She retired as a cashier from the Bad Axe K-Mart. She enjoyed making jewelry, doll collecting, crocheting and embroidering.

Ralph “Bud” Posade, 84, of Elkton, passed away Friday, November 4, 2022 at Huron County Medical Care in Bad Axe. Bud was born January 19, 1938 in Oliver Twp to the late Berthold and Elsie (Forster) Posade. Bud was a farmer and retired from a factory. He enjoyed spending time outdoors at his cabin in Grayling where he snowmobiled, hunted and watched elk. He enjoyed singing during car rides with his dogs while touring the crops.

Biography

Our loving mother, Florence Helen Brown, age 90, passed away on November 3. 2022 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe, following an extended illness. Flo was born March 8, 1932 in Port Hope,she grew up in Bad Axe and was the daughter of the late Herman and Alice (Green) Schultz. She attended Ingram country school, and graduated from Port Hope High School in 1949. Then on March 31, 1951 Florence Helen Schultz married C.B. "DOC" Brown, they were married for 61 years, before he died on May 12, 2012. Being ambitious she worked for Klumps Drug Store, Auto-lite in Port Huron on the assembly line, Dibbles in Bad Axe, and WLEW Radio Station. Together with her husband they bought Bad Axe Dairy Isle, and later started Brown's Bump Shop, from 1959 until 2007, where she was the bookkeeper. During that time they also had Ryder Truck Rental, from 1998-2011. Flo loved to play canasta with her lady friends, and her mother-in-law Mable. Out living them, she then played with family. She also enjoyed bowling, traveling, waiting hand and foot on her husband "DOC". She was very thrifty, never wanted to get rid of anything, because it might have 'value later on. Having a stroke in 2007, her and DOC's goal was for Flo to live at home. Thus making the house handicapped accessible. Now Flo's attitude changed, in that she found more humor in many things. Her drive allowed her to live alone to handle most of her daily needs, along with support of family and professionals. The last several years were spent at Courtney Manor.

Biography

Mr. Clarence “Bud” Ralph Schneeberger, age 89, of Cass City, died peacefully at Covenant Healthcare-Cooper, Saginaw on Nov. 3, 2022. He was born Oct. 6, 1933, in Royal Oak, to the late Steven and Clara (Seifried) Schneeberger. On Dec. 7, 1962 he married the former Opal Holik in Caro, MI. Bud attended Cass City High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean War as an electronics repairman. He then worked at General Motors Corporation in Flint, before moving to Cass City to join his brother, Russell, in business. They established Schneeberger’s Furniture and Appliance Store, which has been a fixture in the Cass City area for over 60 years. In his younger years, Bud was on bowling and golf leagues. Later on, he helped with the Cass City Wrestling Program and the Cass City High School Football Team. He always enjoyed playing with his children and grandchildren and was ready with a bowl of ice cream, a slice of watermelon, or a sweet treat from an Amish bakery. He also attended Cass City Nazarene Church, until it closed, then he attended Novesta Church of Christ.

She was born on March 1, 1926 in Thurman, Colorado, to the late Levi & Mamie (Schrock) Schlabach. She and Raymond Kosal were united in marriage on January 23, 1946 in Bad Axe. He preceded her in death on December 7, 2016. Irene was a member of the Davison Free Methodist church. She enjoyed painting, art, gardening, reading, baking, and cake decorating.

Barthol "Bud" Roggenbuck, age 93 of Harbor Beach, passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at his home under hospice care in Lithia, Florida. He was born on May 7, 1929 in Harbor Beach to the late Henry and Magdalene (Holdwick) Roggenbuck. Bud served in the US Army, serving overseas in Korea, during the Korean Conflict. He and Geraldine Clor, were united in marriage on May 21, 1955 in OLLH. She preceded him in death on September 22, 1996. Bud was member of many organizations over the years. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church of the Holy Name of Mary Parish in Harbor Beach and the Nativity Catholic Church in Brandon, Florida, Knights of Columbus of Ruth, St. Anthony's Men's Club, served on the Harbor Beach School Board, Ruth Farmers Elevator Board, Holy Name of Mary Parish. On February, 14, 1998, Bud and Eleanor (Wrubel) Oswald were united in marriage.

Gladys was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri on May 29, 1932, to the late Johnny and Nora Forbis. She worked at Fisher Body in Livonia for 28 years. There she met Lyle Cook. They were united in marriage on April 2, 1986. Gladys was an excellent cook and baker. She loved the casino and dogs. She especially loved her dog Tony. Gladys was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She loved to visit with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Kathryn Ruth Sweeney age 83 of Ubly passed away Thursday, October 28, 2022 under hospice care' after a long battle with kidney failure. Kay was born March 10, 1939 in Ruth, Michigan to the late Herbert and Frances (Heilig) Tschirhart. She was united in marriage on August 28, 1965 to James Angus Sweeney at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. He preceded her in death on March 28, 2013. Kay was a farm wife all of her married life, a lifelong member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church, Good Shepherd Parish, she was a member ofthe Christian Mothers, helped clean the church and was active with the parish's chicken BBQ for many years. She was a 4H leader, quilter and avid fabric collector.

Michael James McCrimmon, 67, of Caseville, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2022 at Beaumont Hospital in Troy after a short battle with cancer. Michael was born October 14, 1955 in Pigeon, the eldest son of Ernest and Janet (Gillingham) McCrimmon. Michael attended Caseville Public School and graduated in 1973. After high school Michael joined the United States Air Force in 1976 where he studied electronics and became an E-5 power production specialist. In 1980 he began working at Village Castings in Caseville and became plant manager until 2012 when he went on to work at Walbro in Cass City, MI. Michael spent most of his life in Caseville and was a proud Father, Veteran and Caseville Firefighter until he retired. Besides spending time with his family and friends he enjoyed boating out to North Island with his mother and brothers and fixing and building computers. He had a passion for family history and spent many hours researching and documenting it.

Jimmy loved football, hunting and a good game of euchre. He had been employed at Huron Casting in Pigeon, worked as a Chef at The Boat House in Caseville, and the Breakers, as well as at The Bank Restaurant in Port Austin.

Biography

Harry W. Ventline, 97, of Port Austin, passed away on October 26, 2022 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living. He was born on October 12, 1925 to the late John and Emma Ventline in Dwight Township where he completed school at Ford Country School. Harry entered the service of our country on May 20, 1944 and was attached to Company I, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division and assigned to the Light Machine Gun Group 604. During his time in service, Harry received an all expense paid cruise and tour of England, France, Belgium, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. During his time in the service, Harry was awarded the European Theater Ribbon with 3 Battle Stars, the WWII Victory Medal, the Germany Army of Occupation Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Purple Heart. On May 11, 1946, Harry was discharged from the Army, just 9 days short of two years. On October 2, 1948, Harry married the love of his life, Edna Watchowski. For 65 years, they built a wonderful life together and she preceded him in death on September 5, 2014. Harry worked numerous occupations and retired from Pigeon Manufacturing. Harry’s favorite past time was being outdoors. An avid fisherman and hunter, the woods and the Pinnebog River were two of his favorite places. However, the one place you could always find Harry, was in his garden. While his abundant bounties of tomatoes and strawberries were ever present, nothing was as famous as his pumpkin and corn harvest each fall. Harry was a member of the Annunciation of the Lord Parish and a proud member of American Legion Post 499.
