Biography

Ricky Maurer, age 59, of Bad Axe, passed away at his home on Wednesday, December 5, 2018. Ricky was born December 24, 1958 in Bad Axe, son of the late Vincent and Evelyn (Bannick) Maurer. He married Debbra Sue Koglin on October 15, 1987. She preceded him in death on February 26, 2012. Ricky graduated from Laker High School and worked for Cottick Radiator in Bad Axe and Five Star Dairy in Port Hope. Ricky enjoyed working on cars and his cats Sadie and Rufus. He was a private person and had a fond love for his family.

Biography

Stanley Wolschlager, age 92, of Sheridan Township, was called by the Lord to join the love of his life, Josephine on Dec 5, 2018. Stanley was born in Bad Axe, Michigan on June 24, 1926, son of the late Frank and Agnes (Depcinski). He married Josephine Pikula on September 4, 1954 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Stanley was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister, an usher and a past member of the Sacred Heart Church Council. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1546 and a 4th Degree member of Bishop Babcock assembly in the Color Corp, served as Grand Knight and 4th Degree Navigator. He attended the Becking Rural School and after high school graduation Stanley attended Michigan State University for Agriculture. Stanley worked as a machinist, did excavating work, and retired from working at the church as a bus driver and grounds keeper.He enjoyed farming all of his life and part of that was being a 4-H Leader. He loved gardening and his apple orchard and sharing his harvest with others, he loved taking care of the lawn and flower beds, playing cards, playing softball, watching the Detroit Tigers, his love for ice cream, making popcorn balls for Halloween, Florida winters, and especially spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends.

Michael Eldon Beachy, 57, of Caseville, died at home unexpectedly Saturday, December 1, 2018 from natural causes. Mike was born September 9, 1961 in Pigeon to Eldon and Joanne (Caister) Beachy. In 1980 he graduated from Laker High School. He worked for several of his family’s businesses, including Beachy Poultry Farms, Pigeon Printing and Lefty’s Diner and Drive In. He used his gift for electronics by collecting, selling and operating amateur radio. He was widely known and respected as a licensed amateur radio operator under the call sign “N8ECR,” hosting a weekly discussion network which went all across the US. He was a self taught guitar player and devoted dog lover. “CQ CQ N8ECR signing off.”

Biography

Lillian was born on May 31, 1932 the daughter of the late Edwin and Gertrude (Sosnoski) Knoblock in Port Austin, Michigan. She was the third oldest in a family of 14 children. She and Edward J. Dolan were married at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Port Austin on September 29, 1956. He preceded her in death on October 6, 1975. After graduating from Port Austin High School, Lil moved to Detroit, where she managed to get into Providence School of Nursing by living at the Y.W.C.A. and waitressing at J.L. Hudson’s Tea Room in downtown Detroit. While in Providence, Lil was captain of the basketball team and president of the Student Body. In her third year at Providence she was chosen Student Nurse of the Year. Lil moved her family home to Port Austin in 1975, residing there until she moved to Saline in 1999. Lillian was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Port Austin. She enjoyed her large family, and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She had a great sense of humor and lived life to the fullest. Lil loved to travel throughout the US, as well as Europe, Africa, and Asia.

ROGER J. MEYERSIECK, age 71 of Port Austin, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2018, at McLaren Bay Region Hospital. He was born on December 2, 1946 in Mt. Clemens, to the late Edgar Paul and Dorothy Elisabeth (Glidden) Meyersieck. Roger and Glorianne Merrifield were united in marriage on May 18, 1968 in East Detroit. Roger served in the US Navy Seabee during the Vietnam War. Roger worked as an analyst for GM for 33.5 years, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed camping, woodworking, travelling, especially to Disney World with his family, freighter watching, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed spending time with his dog, Daisy.

She was born July 31, 1949 in Knoxville, TN and moved to Detroit as a small child with her family. Mary was a proud 1968 graduate of Cass Technical High School studying art. She graduated from Macomb Community College majoring in Art. She loved working at Corvettes Department Store as a window designer. She also loved working as a Graphic / Commercial Artist at Living in Fraser newspaper, The Detroit News, Suburban Lifestyles of Rochester and The Oakland Press, which she retired from in 2014. She enjoyed all aspects of art and exploring them. She also spent many hours sewing and reading.

Dorothy Belle Sting, 94, of Pigeon, died Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Home Sweet Home in Pigeon. Dorothy was born February 17, 1924 in Peck to the late Carl and Ruth (Keck) Sharrard. She married Eldon Carl Sting on October 22, 1949 at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church-Berne; he preceded her in death December 30, 1979. She retired from EPBP Laker Schools as a business teacher. She was a longtime member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church-Berne and the church’s women’s society. She was a talented stained glass artist, having made many of the windows for her church’s addition. She enjoyed quilting and flower gardening.

Betty Ann Wardhammar, 83, of Indianapolis, Indiana, formerly of Bad Axe and Sand Point, died Saturday, December 1, 2018 in Indianapolis. Betty Ann was born October 2, 1935 in Paterson, New Jersey to the late Carl and Meta (Borner) Reins. Her early working years were spent as an administrative assistant in New York City’s Empire State Building and then on to Sandvik Steel Corporation. Later on, she cherished her many years as secretary to the principal at the Bad Axe Junior High School. Betty Ann enjoyed visiting with family and friends, singing and the playing the organ, watching sports on television, playing yard games and board games, tending her wildflower garden and being outdoors. Although her life was forever changed by early-onset dementia, Betty Ann was proud to say she was a 2-time cancer survivor, and she enjoyed a long, happy retirement.

Josephine Wolschlager, age 84, of Sheridan Township, went to be with the Lord Dec 1, 2018. She passed away in the arms of her loving husband, Stanley. Josephine was born in Toronto, Canada on July 15, 1934, daughter of the late Frank and Stella (Fliss)Pikula. She married Stanley Wolschlager on September 4, 1954 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Josephine was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister and had served as the president of the Alter Society. She was also a member of the Daughters of Isabella Circle 608 for over 50 years, serving as a recording secretary, trustee and regent. Josephine also served as Township Clerk of Sheridan Township. She worked in the Banking industry for 40 years. She enjoyed canning, making popcorn balls for Halloween, quilting, crocheting, gardening, playing cards, watching the Detroit Tigers, Florida winters, and especially spending time with her family, grandchildren and friends.

Adam Gregory Brewer, age 27, of Verona Township, passed away on November 29, 2018 at his home. Adam was born on May 6, 1991 in Saginaw, Michigan. His parents are Vincent and Jannette (Pionk) Brewer. He graduated from Bad Axe High School in 2010. Adam was a first responder for Bingham Township for four and a half years and worked at Messing Dairy Farm for four years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends; was an avid reader; enjoyed watching western and scary movies and any medical television shows. Adam loved being a first responder. On September 23, 2018, he married the love of his life, Whitney Kay Zinger at her parent’s house in Caseville, Michigan.

Mary Ann Wrubel, age 76, of Minden City, passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Courtney Manor Nursing Facility in Bad Axe with her three sons – Roger, Gary and James by her bedside. Mary Ann was born in Bad Axe on April 19, 1942, daughter of the late Alfred and Evelyn (Glaza) Lemanski. She married Kenneth Wrubel on August 26, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Parisville. Kenneth preceded her in death on April 10, 2018. Mary Ann was a devoted homemaker and helped out on the family farm. She worked at Clements Manufacturing in Deckerville for 20 years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and family time. She attended St. Mary’s Church of Parisville and was a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality.

He preceded her in death on August 9, 1994. She was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, playing bingo, dancing, reading, doing puzzles, and especially being with family.

She and her husband, Fred, farmed at the family farm in Sigel Township until Fred retired in 1987. Arlene enjoyed gardening, sewing and spending time with her family.

Bruce D. Protzman, 93, of Caseville, died Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. Bruce was born at home in Elkton on August 4, 1925 to the late Delcon and Catherine (Hazel) Protzman. He graduated from Elkton High School in 1943 and enlisted in the US Army, serving in Japan during World War II. He married Evelyn Look August 19, 1950 at Hayes Methodist Church; she preceded him in death on July 19, 2017. He was a retired lifelong diary farmer, active in his industry and community. He was formerly involved with the MMPA, TAT Board, Chandler Twp Zoning Board, Caseville American Legion, Hayes United Methodist Church and various other dairy boards.

He was born on March 22, 1934 in Detroit to the late Herbert and Anne (Atherton) Schultz. Larry served in the US Navy, in the Korean Conflict, from 1950-1953. He and Wanda Crews were united in marriage on September 1, 1955 in Highland Park. She preceded him in death on August 9, 2011. Larry was a member of the AmVets Post 115 of Port Hope, the Grindstone Port hope Sportsmen Club, and enjoyed hunting and playing cards, especially euchre.

Mr. Ronald A. Horiski Sr., 72 of Summerfield, FL and formerly of Harbor Beach passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, November 20, 2018 in Ocala, FL. He was born on May 20, 1946 in Detroit to the late Leo and Gertrude (Zagorski) Horiski. He married Terry A. Peyerk on August 6, 1966 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rapson. Ron was a proud veteran of the US Navy, serving in Vietnam on the USS St. Paul CA73. He owned and operated Horiski Masonry. He also worked as an electrician at E-1 in Ocala, FL. Ron enjoyed playing poker with their amazing friends, Mike and Kathy Calcagni and spoiling his puppy, Rosco.

He preceded her in death on August 29, 2005. Marion was a graduate of a country school. She was a parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Hubert Parish in Rapson since 1950 and was a former member of the St. Rita Altar Society. Marion enjoyed baking, canning, playing cards and crocheting afghans.

Beverly was born in Bad Axe, Michigan to the late Arthur W. and Phyllis (Liedke) Clark on September 27, 1943. On August 20, 1988, she married Frederick J. Vandervennet at the Bad Axe United Methodist Church. Beverly was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe, where she also enjoyed singing in the choir. She was the secretary and bookkeeper at Huron Medical Care Facility for 23 years; worked for the City of Wayne for 13 years, where she was the Employee of the Year for the last 4 years before retiring in 2002; and was the secretary for MacAlpine Funeral Home for 10 years, retiring in 2013; where she is greatly missed. In her spare time, she enjoyed working outside on her flowers and spending time with her family and friends.

Mr. Archie “Uncle Archie” Peplinski, 99 of Ruth, passed away Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living in Bad Axe. He was born on April 10, 1919 in Ruth to the late Joseph and Lucy (Woyciechowski) Peplinski. He married Regina Wloch on July 30, 1966 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. She preceded him in death on January 2, 2008. Archie was a graduate of Paris #1 Country School. He was a proud veteran, serving for four years in the US Army Air Corp, serving during the China, Berma and India Theater. He was a member and past Commander of the Parisville VFW Post #5740. He was a Civilian Conservation Corp worker. He was employed in Detroit for Packer’s Motor Car. After returning to Paris Township, Archie farmed and worked for Booms Construction for 25 years, retiring in 1981. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Isidore Parish in Parisville, where he was a member and past president of the Men’s Club. He was also a member of the St. Mary Building Committee and spent many years working the church chicken dinners. Archie was an honorary member of the Ruth Knights of Columbus Council #3823.
