Ardis was born in Cass City on October 3, 1939, daughter of the late George and Verna (Lowe) Pettinger. She married Wayne Dean on April 21, 1973 in Bad Axe. She enjoyed animals and many sports, especially football and baseball.

Biography

Edward Frank Sera of Port Austin, died on February 7, 2017 in Brighton, Michigan. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 1, 1949, the son of the late Edward and Ann (Pendrick) Sera.  Edward and Pamela (Boyd) were married on June 23, 1978. Ed appreciated the simple things in life and cherished moments spent with family and  friends.  Many close to him called him "Fast Eddie", he was a rebel rock star of his time; loved music, movies, art, good food, storm chasing, star gazing and tattoos.  Eddie was an avid Michigan State Fan, spent time building replica's of war models and, when able. loved to golf and garden.  Ed retired from Dow Chemical in Harbor Beach and was a past member of Port Austin Conservation Club, North Huron School Board and Huron County Democratic Party.

Steven S. Cottick, 88, of Caseville died February 6, 2017 at his home. Steve was born Oct. 27, 1928 in Highland Park to the late Stanley and Molly (Godick) Cottick. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He married Sylvia Courtwright on January 21, 1956; she preceded him in death on June 22, 2009. He had lived in Caseville since 1970, and worked as a mechanic.

Robert “Bob” Bloomer, age 65, of Sebewaing, passed away February 5, 2017, at Henry Ford Hospital in the company of loved ones. Though we mourn the loss, we are comforted by the knowledge that his fight/battle is over and he is at peace. Bob was born April 14, 1951, in Mt. Pleasant to Robert and Alice (Demlow) Bloomer. He was raised in Elsie and worked on the family farm. He married Kristine Nowak on November 12, 1977, in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Parnell, MI. In 1979 they moved to Sebewaing. He continued his career in hog farming until his retirement in 2016. He was very active in the industry where he held several positions on both state and national level. He was active in the Catholic Church and enjoyed watching Lions Football and USA Patriots sports. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Robert H. Guigar, 76 of Ubly, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. He was born on May 6, 1940 in Minden City to the late Henry and Irene (Pelot) Guigar. He married Barbara Franzel on June 15, 1963 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Freiburg. She preceded him in death on November 6, 2010. Robert first attended a country school in Minden City and then continued his education at the Ubly Community Schools. He enjoyed spending time with his family, singing and dancing to polkas, playing euchre and casino trips. Robert was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and all around great man. He will be fondly remembered, loved and missed by many.

Mrs. Blanche T. Rumptz, 94, life long resident of the Ubly Area passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017. She was born on October 20, 1922 in Paris Township to the late Leo and Helen (Murray) Maurer. She married Archie H. Rumptz on October 25, 1941 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Smith Corners. He preceded her in death on March 5, 2011. Blanche worked at Thumb Electric for over 40 years. She and her husband, Archie loved to bowl. She was a very active parishioner at Good Shepherd Parish in Ubly where she was a Eucharistic Minister, Catechist, Lay Minister and past president and long time member of the St. John Christian Mothers. Blanche loved playing cards, golfing, dancing and spending time with her grandchildren.

Leona R Fritz age 99, lifelong resident of Elkton, died peacefully Friday evening, February 3, at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. She was born May 10, 1917, at the home of her parents the late Otto and Rosa (Kercher) Ewald in Oliver Twp. On December 7, 1940, she was united in marriage to Leonard W. Fritz at the Elkton Evangelical United Brethren parsonage. Leonard preceded her in death, March 30, 2010, at the age of 96. Leona’s work career started at the local grain elevator sorting beans. From there, she went to work for Ken Weaver, packaging Made Rite Potato Chips in Elkton. In the late sixties, went to Sunny Acres working in housekeeping and later at Provincial House, Cass City, retiring in 1982. She was a lifelong member of the Elkton United Methodist Church and enjoyed quilting, crocheting, working in her flower gardens, barbequing and was an avid word search fanatic.

A.J. was born on November 19, 1944 in Cass City, Michigan to the late William and Clara (Hutchinson) Batie. He graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1964. A.J. was a custodian at the Bad Axe High School and at Huron Tool. He was a past president of the Popple Trail Blazers. In his early years, he milked cows for Cliff Robinson. A.J. loved playing Euchre with his friends, Donald, George and Harry. His Sunday ritual was always listening to polka music on the radio.

Biography

Daniel R. Vogel, age 85, passed away at his home on January 31, 2017, with family members at his side after a short illness. He was born at home near Helena on July 26, 1931, to George and Clare (Essenmacher) Vogel. Daniel served his country from 1952 to 1954 in the United States Army in Germany during the Korean conflict. Daniel married Mildred Messing on August 25, 1956, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth, Michigan. Daniel was an active member of the Holy Apostles Parish where he participated and volunteered at many parish functions. He joined the Knights of Columbus in 1961 and was a fourth degree member. He was also a trustee of the Ruth Knights of Columbus Council and Building Corporation. Daniel was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, Post Number 5740 of Ruth. He was a very active member in his community. Daniel served on the Minden City Council for the past ten years. He was a former member of the Saints Peter and Paul School Board. He was a past member of the Board of Review for Minden Township and the Zoning Board for Minden Township. Daniel was a life-long farmer and retired from farming at the age of 82. Besides enjoying being with his family and friends, he loved to play euchre, travel, go dancing, and listen to polka music.

Cynthia A Kluger age 68 of Bad Axe died Monday morning, January 30, at the Huron County Medical Care Rehabilitation Unit following a long illness. She was born April 9, 1948 in Mt. Clemens to Elaine (Beatham) Clark and the late Charles Clark. She moved to Capac with her parents in 1960. On July 7, 1965, she was united in marriage to H. Frank Kluger at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Capac. In 1975, they moved to Huron County. She was employed with Walbro in Cass City for 35 years retiring in 2011. She also worked with Frank in his insurance office. Cynthia was an active person and enjoyed motor cycling, camping, crafting, sewing and baking.

Mrs. Angeline Deachin, 87 of Ubly, passed away Sunday morning, January 29, 2017 at her residence. She was born on July 6, 1929 in Sand Beach Township to the late Joseph and Martha (Michalski) Geiger. She married Leonard Deachin on February 7, 1959 at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. Leonard preceded her in death on March 5, 1993. Angeline attended the Ubly Elementary School. Once married, she farmed with Leonard and they retired from farming together in 1984. Angeline also held various other jobs throughout her life. She was a parishioner at St. John Catholic Church of Good Shepherd Parish in Ubly. Angeline enjoyed reading, word searches and cherished spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Lois is preceded in death by her father, George Prich, Jr., and brother-in-law, Wayne Rueger.

Biography

Lois Ann Nast, age 57, of Cheboygan, formerly of Gagetown, passed away January 29, 2017, at Masonic Pathways in Alma. Lois is a breast cancer survivor and lost her battle with Lou Gehrigs Disease (ALS). She was a true fighter and believer! Lois was born in Bay City on November 28, 1959, the daughter of George and Dorothy (Schairer) Prich, Jr. She married Roger Nast on March 30, 1991. She worked at Walbro in Cass City and Walmart in Cheboygan and enjoyed her talent as a certified massage therapist. She had a special talent of sewing, quilting and crafting. Her crafts brought joy to many and her lap quilts gave comfort to the veterans. She enjoyed flower gardening and her two dogs. Lois was a lifelong member of the Associates of the Vietnam Veterans of American (AVVA) Chapter 274 (in Cheboygan). She enjoyed attending Evangelical Covenant Church in Cheboygan. Her pride and joy were her three children and two grandchildren.

William Learman, age 81 of Harbor Beach, MI; passed away Friday, January 27, 2017 at Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born on March 27, 1935 to the late Lowry and Gladys (McGregor) Learman. Bill and Barbara Somerville were united in marriage on May 18, 2001 in Harbor Beach. Bill was a retired farmer, worked at A & P for 24 years, retiring in 1991, and also worked at H & R Block. He was an avid golfer, liked to play cards, especially bridge, watch sports, read and enjoy his garden.

Kaylin Jo Roggenbuck, devoted daughter, loving sister, and a genuine friend, age 19 of Harbor Beach, MI began her new journey as a guardian angel on January 27th, 2017. Kaylin was born March 13th, 1997. She graduated from Harbor Beach High School in 2015. She was attending Grand Rapids Community College while also working at MVP Kids Spot in Rockford, MI residing with her sister. Kaylin was planning to continue her education in Diagnostic Sonography. Family was everything to Kaylin. She especially enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews whether she was reading books to them, holding their hands until they fell asleep, playing with toy tractors on the floor, watching Disney movies, swimming, and soothing them when they were sad. Kaylin was a proud Godmother to her nephew Liam Roggenbuck and niece Isla McCarthy. Kaylin’s heart was her compass throughout her life and wanted everyone to feel beautiful and loved. She was the first to give a smile with a sparkle in her eye to a friend or a stranger and the first to give a sincere compliment or a helping hand. Kaylin had a passionate love of music, enjoyed making friendship bracelets, taking walks with family, reading, and jet-skiing. Kaylin had an infectious smile, a bubbly personality, and a giggle that lifted others spirits around her. Kaylin was proud to be an organ donor and her wishes were honored by her family.

Avis Marie (Nelson) Dodt, age 84, of Sand Point, formerly of Farmington Hills, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, with family by her side. Avis was born April 17, 1932 in Woburn, Massachusetts to the late Robert and Flora (MacLean) Nelson. She graduated from Waltham (Massachusetts) High School in 1950. She married James J. Dodt on December 21, 1951 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waltham; Jim preceded her in death on September 9, 2006. In 1953 she moved to Michigan, settling in Farmington Hills until moving to Sand Point in 1994. Words cannot capture the qualities of Avis. She was a strong, independent, unique woman, who could be a bit of a “pistolla” at times. Avis had a creative, brilliant mind and her creativity knew no bounds – she sculpted, painted, was an impeccable seamstress, built beautiful gardens, and created stunning blown egg ornaments. Avis was also known to repair just about anything! She could also cut a mean rug and would never willingly leave the dance floor. She was giving and compassionate in all aspects of her life, as evidenced by her career choice to teach special needs children. Avis spent 25 years working with special education students in Farmington Schools. Avis loved to read, solve crossword puzzles and was a fierce competitor in word games - just ask her friends, children and grandchildren. Later in life, Avis’ volunteer spirit was ignited to the benefit of many, including the Caseville Library Club and Caseville Eagles Auxiliary 3690 where she served many roles including Past Madame President. She also developed a love of bling, with a little gambling on the side.

She loved working in the garden, playing cards, taking care of her cats and being with family.

She preceded him in death on August 1, 1997. Jerome served in the US Navy, and was a member of the American Legion Post 197. Jerome was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach. He sailed on the Great Lakes for 7 years, and was a brick layer, and retired from Rapson Electric in 1996. He enjoyed fishing and being on the lake.

Linda Howard, 74, of Harbor Beach, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2017 at Autumnwood of Deckerville. Though we mourn the loss, we are comforted in the knowledge that her battle is over and she is no longer lost. Linda was born and raised in Port Hope, Michigan. She married the love of her life, Douglas Howard in 1961. She was the “lunch lady” for over thirty years at Harbor Beach schools. She was a devout member of St. John’s & Zion Lutheran Churches. She was a fun, loving, kind woman; always there to help others. Linda enjoyed gardening, reading, crocheting, playing cards and traveling. She loved wintering in Florida and spent many hours walking the beaches.

Daniel K Leitch, age 84 of Bay Port passed away Monday evening, January 23, at Mid-Michigan Medical Center from complications with his heart. He was born February 16, 1932 in Chandler Twp at the home of his parents, the late Henry and Myrtie (Haley) Leitch. Dan grew up on a farm north of Elkton and graduated from Elkton High School in 1951. On September 4, 1973, he was united in marriage to Patricia L Sander at the First United Methodist Church, Pigeon. Pat preceded him in death November 16, 2001. Dan was employed with the Huron County Road Commission for over 30 years, retiring in 1994, prior to that he worked road construction and helped build many of Michigan’s highway He was a very active member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Caseville. Dan was a builder/craftsman at heart. He built several new homes in the area along with many storage sheds and trailers. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, eating pie and shopping at Menards. Dan was known around the area as the "fish scaler guy". He designed and built many fish scalers during his life and was the go to guy when you wanted something unique built.

Clara I. Ventline, 88, of Port Austin, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2017 under the care at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Clara was born on January 12, 1929 to the late James and Isabell (McCallaster) Badgley in Hume, Township. On November 16, 1946 she married Leo J. Ventline at St. Michael Catholic Church in Port Austin. He preceded her in death on November 27, 2004. Clara worked at Lakeside Motor Lodge in Port Austin for over thirty years. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church/Annunciation of the Lord Parish. She was the perfect host; you would never leave her house with an empty stomach. Clara loved walking in parks and beaches, collecting rocks. She loved watching basketball especially March Madness. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
