Biography

Lois Jean Rowlett, 81, of Madison Heights, formerly of Meade Township passed away peacefully on December 14, 2015 at Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Michigan. Lois was born in Meade Township on November 4, 1934 to the late Edward and Anna (Cox) Taylor. On December 18, 1954, Lois married Carl Arthur Rowlett in Detroit, Michigan. He preceded her in death in April 1998. Lois enjoyed ceramics, sewing, baking cookies around Christmas time and spending time with her family and friends.

Ronald T. Sieradzki, 57, of Cass City died following a long illness Monday, December 14, 2015 in St. Mary Medical Center, Saginaw. He was born July 20, 1958 in Detroit to Chester and Marlene (Tomaszewski) Sieradzki. He married Teri Ann Ortiz September 12, 1987 in Bronx, NY. Ron graduated from Cass City High School in 1976. He played football, ran track and wrestled during his high school career. Ron worked on the family farm before moving to Denver, CO in 1978. He worked at a local refinery there before moving to Bronx, NY where he worked at Tremont Glass and Hunts Metal. Ron returned to Cass City in 1989. He worked for Barnbuilders for many years and then became a self employed carpenter doing roofing, building pole barns and remodeling jobs with family and friends. Ron enjoyed playing pool and darts and loved to play lotto. He enjoyed watching football on television and loved time spent outside by the campfire. Ron had a great sense of humor and never missed an opportunity to offer a wise crack or tease someone close to him. Anyone could be a target.

He was born on June 1, 1950 in Sandusky to the late Raymond and Pauline (Cummings) Slater. Gary and Catherine Booms were united in marriage on June 28, 1969 in Ruth. Gary was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, of the Holy Apostles Parish. He owned and operated the Gary Slater Tractor Repair and Salvage for 35 years. Gary also enjoyed playing softball.

Biography

Stanley Heleski, age 85, of Sheridan Township, passed away Sunday, December 13, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. Stanley was born November 15, 1930 in Ubly, son of the late Nick and Agnes (Glaza) Heleski. He married Dorothy Bugenski on November 5, 1960 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Port Austin. Stanley was a lifelong Sheridan Township farmer who also was a sales representative for a seed company. He was a member of the Ivanhoe Road Runners, Farm Bureau, Tip of the Thumb Dance Club and a Township trustee. He was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening, euchre, dancing, playing his accordian, making wine and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Herbert (Herb) Janowiak, age 89, of Bad Axe, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2015, at Bay McLaren Hospital in Bay City, surrounded by his family. Herb was born on August 8, 1926, in Austin Township, son of the late Albert and Anna (Pelot) Janowiak. Herb married Bernadine (Bernie) Fligger on October 3, 1964, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Smith Corners in Bad Axe. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean conflict. Herb owned a milk hauling business, serving Nestles and eventually Michigan Milk, from the late 1940s through the 1960s. He was the proprietor of Herb’s Huron Inn hotel, restaurant, and bar in Ubly from 1960-71. Herb was also a bus driver for Ubly Community Schools, while simultaneously farming, until retirement.

Durwin Rice, 77, of Port Austin, died Wednesday, December 9, 2015. He was born in Bad Axe, Michigan on August 29, 1938, the son of Raymond and Oveda (Inda) Rice. Durwin was a member of The American Legion, Frank Horetski Post 499, Port Austin and the Historian for the 7th District American Legion. Durwin Rice and Karen Gurche have been married for 40 years. He worked as a Deputy Sheriff in Macomb County for 25 years. He loved to show dogs, specially Weimaraners, and loved gardening. He moved back to Huron County in 1992.

Biography

Mr. Theodore “Ted” Seidl, 92 of Ruth, passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at his residence under hospice care with his loving family by his side. He was born on August 11, 1923 in Ruth, MI to the late Peter and Katherine (Poell) Seidl. He married Carla A. Feldt on July 10, 1948 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. She preceded him in death on October 27, 2013. Ted was a graduate of the Pumpkin Center Country School. He spent two years in the Merchant Marines working on submarines in San Francisco and sailing the Great Lakes. Ted was a lifelong farmer in Sherman Township where he was proud of many firsts. He was the first to have tiled land, the first to put up a pole barn for his cattle and was the first to use the surge touchless milking system on his farm. Ted also built his own house and farm buildings. He was a County Bean Commissioner and a Premier sugar beet grower. He was a parishioner at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church of Holy Apostle Parish in Ruth where he served as an usher. Ted was one of the charter members of the Ruth Knights of Columbus Council #3823 in 1954. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Babcock Assembly #0487 of Bad Axe. Ted loved to travel throughout the United States with his wife. He enjoyed Tiger baseball, woodworking, and various card games.

Shirley was born in Bad Axe on November 26, 1940 to the late Merle and Edna (Frantz) Nelson. On August 19, 1961, she married Terry R. Bambach. He preceded her in death on June 11, 2014. Shirley enjoyed bonfires with her family, bird watching, outdoor television shows, playing Scrabble (and usually winning), crossword puzzles, board games and reading.

Steven L. Craig age 64, of Colfax Twp near Elkton, left this earth suddenly, to be with his mother and the Lord in Heaven. He had suffered a stroke in November and was moved to the medical care facility for therapy but was never to recover. He was born March 13, 1951 in Bad Axe to Glenn Craig and the late Ethel (Block) Craig and grew up on a farm near Souletown. Steve was a 1969 graduate of Laker High School, then pursued a degree in agriculture at Michigan State University. Steve moved to Texas working as a “Roughneck’ in the oil fields for a while before purchasing a farm in Huntsville, TX where he started a haying business. He returned to Huron County, on Pinnebog Road and started farming, growing asparagus and strawberries, while working at Active Industries for 10 of those years. He mastered the art of growing strawberries and became known as the Strawberry King. He hired many local kids, mentored them and taught them some of life’s values by showing them what hard work was about. He enjoyed being surrounded by younger kids, he had many foster and troubled children over the years in his home. Steve moved his strawberry patch to Filion Road and continued raising asparagus for many years. To stay busy during the winter months, he worked at Michigan Sugar, Sebewaing. The last few years, he started a pyrotechnics business, put on firework displays for area communities and individuals. He also found a passion for selling on Ebay, dealing in removing scrap from large estates and being outside cutting firewood to heat his home. Steve enjoyed the bachelor, living on his own style of life. He was a very active member of the Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints, Bad Axe.

Wanda Binder, age 85, of Bad Axe, passed away on Friday December 4, 2015, with her family by her side.. Wanda was born May 13, 1930 in Bad Axe, daughter of the late Roy and Nellie (Styles) Sparling. She married Carl Binder on July 31, 1948 at the First Baptist Church of Bad Axe. Wanda lived in the Bad Axe area all her life, graduating from Bad Axe High School. She was a housewife who also helped her husband on the farm. Wanda made her family a priority in her life and it showed through how much she adored everyone in it. One of her greatest joys was holding her grandchildren and her great grandchildren as newborns. Wanda spent many years serving her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, at the First Baptist Church of Bad Axe. During her service, she taught Sunday School, was a Deaconess and served on many other boards and committees. She touch many lives with her loving kindness and infectious laugh.

Meta A. O’Connor age 84, of Pigeon formerly of Zephyrhills, FL and Elkton died Thursday afternoon, December 3, at Country Gardens Assisted Living, Pigeon with her family by her side. She was born August 12, 1931, to the late Charles and Helene (Burzyck) Thiel in Oliver Twp. Meta grew up on the family farm north of Elkton and graduated from Elkton High School, Class of ’49. She attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Saginaw and received her RN in 1952. Meta practiced nursing for over 40 years in a variety of clinical settings. In each of these she was respected for her knowledge and skill, but above all for her compassion. To Meta the practice of healing was an extension of her love and faith. On November 7, 1953, she was united in marriage to William J. O’Connor at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon. They made their home in Elkton where they raised their family. In 1977 she and Bill moved to Zephyrhills, FL where they owned and operated a residential care facility for the elderly. And then following their retirement they enjoyed living on their farm in Chandler Twp near family and life-long friends. Meta was devoted to her family and her entire life was devoted to loving and caring for others. She was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church.

She was born September 3, 1926 to Edward and Emma (Schulz) Voss of Pigeon, and graduated in 1944 from Pigeon High School. She married Keith Fritz on June 29, 1946 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Berne, where she was a member all her life. Keith preceded her in death on August 20, 2007. Ruth farmed along with her husband Keith throughout the years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and she always had time for other people.

Gloria Ann Schelke, 70 of Ubly, passed away Monday evening, November 30, 2015, 21 years to the day her father passed away, at the William Beaumont Hospital after suffering a long illness with her loving children and nephew by her side. Gloria was born on October 21, 1945 in Bad Axe to the late Mike K. and Agnes (Pionk) Grifka. Gloria attended grade school at the Hogsback Country School and St. John’s Catholic School. She was a 1964 graduate of Ubly High School. Gloria earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Michigan State University in 1968. She was a very proud Spartan which led her to attending the Rose Bowl in 1968 to cheer on her Spartan team. Gloria spent many hours cross stitching treasures for her loved ones. She was a member of the Bad Axe Seniors Club. She loved teaching and playing bridge with her friends and loved watching big tennis matches on TV. Gloria loved all of her family and friends, but truly cherished time spent with her two children, son-in-law and four grandchildren.

Verneita “Neita” Braun, 89, 0f Bad Axe, formerly of Elkton, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2015 at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe, after a short illness. Neita was born November 27, 1926 in Hume Township. She was the daughter of the late Edward L. and Anna M. (Cox) Taylor, granddaughter of the late Buron and Alta (Schad) Cox, Colf and William and Emaline (Hagle) Taylor. On March 16, 1946, Neita was united in marriage to Albert “Bert” Braun Jr. at the Chandler Presbyterian Church by the Reverend Marshall W. Simpson. Bert preceded her in death on January 2, 2001. Neita lived and farmed with her husband Bert of fifty-four years on the same farm Bert’s father and grandfather had farmed before them. In Chandler Township, which became a Centennial Farm in 1970. Neita worked alongside her husband milking cows, driving tractor in the field and doing other numerous farm jobs, beside keeping up a home, raising four children and later helping raise five grandchildren (which were the joy of her life). The past thirteen years Neita has resided in Bad Axe with her son Jim. There she became acquainted with many new and wonderful friends whom she cherished very much and who brought many hours of joy and happiness to what could have been days of lonely hours.

Shirley Taylor, age 83, of Bad Axe, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, November 29, 2015. Shirley was born On May 5, 1932, in Detroit, daughter of the late Peter John and Gladys (Stickney) Wertz. She married Howard Stark Taylor on October 11, 1952 in Bad Axe. He preceded her in death on February 10, 2004. Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was a lifetime member of the Bad Axe First Baptist Church. She enjoyed working with the Senior Saints, gardening, sewing, baking and canning.

She was born in Fairhaven Township, MI on November 9, 1923 and was the daughter of William A. and Frances (Nimtz) Kuhl. On January 7, 1950 she was united in marriage to Edward H. Stoeckle, who preceded her in death on August 21, 1988. Helen was a homemaker throughout her lifetime. She had attended beauty school and was a beautician for many years. She enjoyed embroidery as well as making baby quilts. Helen was a faithful, lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh, MI.

Eugene Younglove, 84, of Bad Axe, passed away on November 27, 2015 at Courtney Manor. He was born in Saginaw, Michigan on September 7, 1931 to the late Alfred and Catherine (Chaple) Younglove. Eugene enjoyed old western movies especially the ones that stared John Wayne and walking around town. In fact, you probably saw him a time or two. He loved any kind of candy and wasn’t afraid to let anyone know that.
