MARILYN SCOTT, age 74 of Port Hope, passed away Friday, January 18, 2013 at her home under hospice care with her family at her side. She was born on July 17, 1938 in Port Hope to the late Herbert & Minnie (Pleiness) Hearit. She and William Scott were united in marriage on November 26, 1960 in Harbor Beach. He preceded her in death on April 6, 2012. Together they ran and owned Main Street Antiques in Port Hope. She enjoyed watching birds, gardening, and antiques.

Phillip Lee “Buck” Zawilinski, 51, of Cass City, died following a long illness Thursday, January 17, 2013 in his home with his loving family by his side. He was born November 13, 1961 in Cass City to Martin Richard and Virginia Mae (Newton) Zawilinski. He married Cheryl Celeste Wilson August 13, 1988 in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Marlette. Phil worked as a laborer and then a foreman for C.A. Hull of Walled Lake in bridge construction for 26 years. He was a member of the Laborers Union Local #1191. Phil loved building things with wood, especially wishing wells. He liked to cook and enjoyed camoing and canoeing with his family and friends. Phil enjoyed deer hunting, salmon and walleye fishing. He was a member of St. Pancratius Catholic Church. Phil was a hard worker, respected friend and fellow employee. He was often given special tasks at work that he completed quickly and efficiently. He enjoyed sharing stories and making his friends and family smile.

She was born on June 10, 1919 in Detroit, to the late George and Elsie (Heimberger) Westfall. Mildred attended Cooly High School in Detroit. Mildred and Harold Benhke were united in marriage on November 21, 1944 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on November 11, 1978. Mildred worked at the A&P Food Store in Detroit for 6 years. Mildred was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Harbor Beach. She enjoyed raising her family, crocheting, sewing, quilting, playing cards, gardening and flowers.

She is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Grace was preceded in death by her sisters Edna and Mary Evelyn and brother Charles.
Grace Louise Donahue passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, January 14, 2013 in Danbury, Connecticut after a short illness. She was born on March 2, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Charles and Evelyn Weber and united in marriage to Donald Donahue on July 10, 1954. He preceded her in death on July 5, 1993. Grace enjoyed a very full life, and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved the out of doors and in particular her corner of the world on Lake Huron in Port Austin. She was a school teacher before marriage and loved to tell her family about her experiences as a young girl growing up in St. Philip Neri Parish in Detroit and at Nazareth Academy in Kalamazoo where she graduated high school. Her family recalls the many wonderful, fun years that she and her husband Don spent raising their large family in the Detroit suburbs and spending summers together in Huron County. Grace loved Port Austin, the many friendships that she enjoyed there, the parish community of St. Michael, the gathering of family and the beautiful Lake Huron sunsets. She will be remembered for her reassuring ways, her devotion to God, to St. Joseph and Mary, her cheerfulness and love of song.

Betty Jane Bolda, age 69 of Bay Port, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, January 12, 2013 at her home with her family at her bedside. She had been battling cancer and under the care of her family as well as hospice. She was born in Fairhaven Township on April 16, 1943 and was the daughter of the late George Arthur and Alice Marie (Boise) Deming. On January 20, 1962 she and Michael J. Bolda were united in marriage at St. Francis Borgia Catholic in Pigeon. Betty enjoyed having and going to garage sales and going to the casino. She once won a Pontiac Firebird. She would read through her cookbooks with her friends and watch the Food Network - then prepare special recipes for her family. She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially loved her grandchildren.

Julia Hope Voelker, 23 of Pigeon, joined her Lord and Savior in heaven on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at home surrounded by her family. Born at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon on December 4, 1989, she was the daughter of Eldon and Peggy (Hunsanger) Voelker. Julia graduated from Laker High School in 2008, and Grand Valley State University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies. She had been studying for the LSAT in preparation for attending Law School. While in high school, Julia was active with FFA and was 2008-2009 state officer of Michigan FFA. She was active with Youth for Christ as a member of the Cornerstone singing group. Julia always placed others before herself. She enjoyed and was dedicated to serving her Lord Jesus by traveling on mission trips-to Mexico, Columbus, Ohio, and Ethiopia. Julia was a member of Pigeon River Mennonite Church. She loved worshipping God, especially through music. She sang a lot of worship music with her friends and family; she loved to share music with her parents. She dearly loved her family and spent as much time as she could with them all. She was a dedicated Detroit Lions fan.

Glenn B. Wahl, 84, of Port Austin died Saturday, January 12, 2013, surrounded by his family at his winter home in Bullhead City, Arizona after battling cancer. Glen was born in Lincoln Twp, near Filion, Michigan on December 9, 1928 the son of the late William and Dora (Brinker) Wahl. He and Clara Ahearn were married on February 12, 1955 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Clara preceded him in death on November 15, 1968. Glen and Sharon Baranski were married on July 23, 1985 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Port Austin. Glen enjoyed spending winters in Arizona, loved playing Euchre and very much enjoyed his farming specialty, baling hay.

Joan was born on September 6, 1938 in Argyle, MI to the late Bernell and Leone (Rose) Doerr. She married Marcus T. Osantowski on August 13, 1955 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Argyle. He preceded her in death on July 29, 1996. Joan attended the Argyle Country School. She was a parishioner at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Argyle since 1955. Joan was a homemaker most of her life. She worked at Lyntex Manufacturing in the sewing dept for ten years before she retired. Joan had resided in the Deckerville area for 14 years. She enjoyed cards, darts, gardening, canning, playing Keno and casino trips.

Helen Louise Thrushman, 83, resident of Ferndale, Mi and formerly of Port Austin passed away, Thursday January 10, 2013 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI. She was born December 24, 1929 in Detroit to the late William Henry and Helen Elizabeth (Lavalli) Stummer. Helen was united in marriage to Roland Thrushman on February 5, 1955 at the Olivet Presbyterian Church in Detroit. She earned her Registered Nursing Degree and worked for 42 years retiring from Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Helen enjoyed knitting, sewing, bingo and playing cards. She was a member of the U of I Club, Port Austin, MI.

Ruth V. Milton age 85, of Elkton died Wednesday evening, January 9, at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. She was born July 21, 1927 in Port Huron to the late Peter and Matilda (Richert) May. Ruth graduated from Port Huron High School in 1945 and went on to Port Huron Junior College graduating with the “Class of 1947”. Ruth was united in marriage to Richard Milton September 16, 1950 at her parent’s home in Port Huron Twp. She had been employed at the St. Clair County Health Dept. for 8 1/2 years before moving to a farm outside of Bad Axe in1957, there she became a stay at home mother to raise her children. Richard preceded her in death May 3, 1989. Ruth was a long time member of Cross Lutheran Church and Sarah Circle, and was very active her church activities. She is a former member of the Elkton Extension Club and enjoyed reading, sewing and working in her flower gardens.

Ronald W. Peterson, 73, of Caseville, died January 9, 2013 in Sun City Center, Florida after a short illness. Ron was born February 15, 1939 in Bad Axe to the late Arthur and Arlene (Merrick) Peterson. He graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1957 and then joined the US Coast Guard, serving four years. On November 4, 1961 he and Judith Dombrowski of Bad Axe were married at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. Together they moved to Bay City and raised a family. Ron was an electrician at General Motors, retiring in 2000. In 1999 they moved to Sand Point. He was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church, Caseville Eagles, Knights of Columbus and Hidden Harbor. They enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida.

Emerson C. Kain, age 92, of Owendale, passed away Monday, January 7, 2013 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living in Bad Axe, following a lengthly illness. He was born April 11, 1920 in Owendale, son of the late Jacob and Mary (Kuhl) Kain. Emerson was united in marriage to Mildred Nimtz on August 30, 1941 in Kilmanagh and was blessed with six daughters. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran church in Linkville. He liked playing cards, farming and going on crop tours. He was very proud of his membership of 50 years in the Laborers’ Local 1098.

Shirley Partaka, 76 of Ubly and formerly of Brown City, passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at McLaren Bay Regional Hospital in Bay City. Shirley was born on June 29, 1936 in Marlette to the late Fred and Martha (Gorsline) Abel. She married Clarence Partaka on June 29, 1974 in Bad Axe, MI. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2009. Shirley loved cooking, cleaning, gardening and spending time in the woods with her grandchildren. She always enjoyed a good party and loved playing euchre. Shirley was “Grandma” to a lot of children in the neighborhood. She truly enjoyed her many outings with her special friend, Casey Mignoni.

James Robert Yaroch, 69, formerly of Bad Axe, passed away unexpectedly at his home Saturday, January 5, 2013, in Hickory, North Carolina. He was born July 26, 1943 in Bad Axe to the late Albert and Mary (Meagher) Yaroch. James was a graduate of Bad Axe High School, Class of 1961. He joined teh United State Army shortly after graduation. After returning home from the military he was employed at Hamill Mfg. in Bad Axe and carpentry and painting, which he continued doing after moving to Hickory, N.C. area. He will be fondly remembered as one of the early pioneers in alternative living, possessed an unrivaled sense of humor, and was an avid guitar player and singerof classic music.

Richard E. Dallas, age 88 of Harbor Beach, passed away Thursday, January 03, 2013 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Port Huron. He was born on August 14, 1924 in Detroit, MI and was the son of the late Henry and Helen (Nowak) Dallas. Dick and Rita Braun were united in marriage on May 25, 1948 in Sts. Peter & Paul Church, Ruth, MI. She preceded him in death Sept. 16, 1989. Dick was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Navy. Richard was the owner of Dallas Standard Service in Ruth from 1957 to 1984. Dick was the Sherman Township Supervisor for 10 Years, and Township Treasurer for 14 years as well as the Assessor. He was on the original Board for the Eastern Huron Ambulance Service of Harbor Beach, helping to organize the service. He was a member of the Parisville VFW Post in Ruth, Knights of Columbus Ruth Council #3823, and a long time member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. Richard enjoyed fishing, golfing, teasing and talking with everyone.

Viola A. Church, 72, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012 at McLaren Bay Region, Bay City. She was born on April 14, 1940 in Minden City to Ted and Irene Lamke. Viola married Wayne L. Church on May 20, 1961, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Parisville. They shared over 51 years together celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2011. In her early years she worked at Hamill Seat Belt Factory in Bad Axe and retired after many years of working for the Kinde North Huron School District. Viola was a very active member of the St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Kinde where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, however, her love was teaching the church’s youth as a religious education teacher for many years. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved being outdoors, feeding the birds, doing all kinds of crafts and spoiling her dog, Rocky.
