Mr. Leroy James Page, 74 of Ruth, passed away Monday, October 29, 2018 at Henry Ford Detroit Hospital. He was born on August 12, 1944 in Ruth to the late David and Christina (Booms) Page. Leroy was a graduate of Sts. Peter & Paul High School. He was employed at Tower (aka Active) and was a mail carrier for 44 years, retiring in 2015. He was a parishioner of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Holy Apostles Parish in Ruth since 1987 where he was a very active member of the Usher’s Club. Leroy enjoyed the accordion, farming, playing euchre, Uno, checkers and visiting with dear family and friends.

Violet (Vi) Brown, age 91, of Bad Axe, MI passed away on October 28, 2018 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living Home in Bad Axe. Violet was born December 30, 1926 in Sheridan Township, MI to the late Bertha and Donald McIntosh. Violet graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1944. She attended the Cadet Nursing Corps, graduating from Saint Mary’s School of Nursing in Saginaw, MI in 1947. On April 22, 1950, Violet married Calvin Brown in Bad Axe. Together they raised 11 children. He preceded her in death on October 15, 2018. Violet worked as a registered nurse for over 40 years. She began at Hubbard Hospital in Bad Axe in January 1948 and worked there until her retirement from Huron Memorial Hospital in January 1989. Violet enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church/Saint Hubert Parish in Bad Axe.

JEANIE M. FERRIBY, age 64 of Ruth, passed away Friday, October 26, 2018 at her home in Ruth. She was born on December 6, 1953 in Bad Axe to Helen “Elaine†(Gwisdalla) Maurer, and the late Lester Maurer. Jeanie worked for the Harbor Beach Community Hospital and at Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center, handling all of their marketing and fundraisers. She was a vital part of the Harbor Beach Hospital Foundation, and took pride in all her work. Jean is a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth, the Mustard Seeds, a board member of the Huron County Community Foundation, a leader for the Country Corners 4H Club and the Harbor Beach Hospital Foundation. She enjoyed drinking wine, shopping, traveling to Texas to see family, dancing, playing cards, entertaining a crowd, and especially spending time with family and grandchildren.

She was the valedictorian of Elkton High School in 1949. She married James Brown in March 1952 in Elkton; he preceded her in death in December 1965. She was a longtime and active member of Hayes United Methodist Church and Hayes UMW. She volunteered at Huron County Medical Care Facility and Helping Hands Thrift Store. She was a member of the Pigeon Historical Society. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and cooking.

She was born on April 6, 1929 in Detroit to the late Alexander and Lucille (Palach) Nowicki. She married Edward Mausolf on May 1, 1948 at Queen of Apostles Catholic Church in Hamtramck. He preceded her in death on March 1, 1984. Florence was a graduate of Queen of Apostles Elementary School. She worked in various stores in the Detroit area before getting married and moving to Minden City in 1948. Florence farmed with her husband. She and Edward moved to Parisville in 1975. Florence was a parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Isidore Parish in Parisville where she was a member of the St. Isidore Rosary Sodality, the choir and taught CCD. She was the president of an area senior citizen’s club. Florence enjoyed baking, cooking, quilting and playing cards.

Arthur A. Punke, 70, of Caseville,MI, died Monday, October 22, 2018 at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe, MI. Art was born August 6, 1948 in Bloomington, Illinois to the late Clifford Dean and Mary Marcella (Schopp) Punke. He worked as a police dispatcher in Normal, Illinois until being permanently disabled in a car accident in 1980. He later moved to Cadillac and in 1996 to Caseville. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Caseville Rod and Gun Club. Art enjoyed hunting, fishing, gun collecting, watching sports, crossword puzzles, playing cards and supporting various organizations. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and his dog Snoopy. He was a very loving and generous man and will be missed by many.

Gloria Flannery, age 83, of Bad Axe, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at home with her family by her side. Gloria was born May 16, 1935 in Verona Township, daughter of the late Bernard and Anna (Osantoski) Hanson. She married Peter Flannery on May 25, 1957 at Sacred Heart Parish in Bad Axe. Gloria graduated at the age of 16 from Bad Axe High School in 1952. She then graduated from Central Michigan University in 1957. She began teaching in rural schools throughout Huron County, including Church, Big Burning and Kipper. She spent most of her career at Verona Mills, retiring in 1992. She continued her love of teaching children by substitute teaching for several years as well as volunteering at St. Stephens’ School in Florida. After retiring, she and Peter traveled extensively, visiting 46 states and 18 countries. They wintered in Riverview, Florida from 1999 – 2015. Gloria was an active member of St. Hubert’s Parish, including organizing, cooking and serving funeral dinners and serving the community in the Food Pantry. Gloria loved thrift shopping and relished a good deal. She enjoyed laughing and spending time with her friends and family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was born on October 26, 1942 in Harbor Beach, to the late Stewart & Rosena (Koglin) Kelley. Kelley and Phillip Junkkari were united in marriage on August 26, 1972 in Sault Ste. Marie. She was born on December 9, 1925 in Detroit to the late Roman and Grace (Wehner) Dropiewski. She married Joseph Gentner on June 5, 1948 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Helena. He preceded her in death on October 28, 2004. Joyce was a graduate of the Helena Country School. She farmed with her husband for years before taking a job at Hamill Seatbelt factory for 12 years. Joyce was also an Aide at Deckerville Community Hospital for 8 years before she retired to enjoy life. Joyce was a former parishioner of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth and a current parishioner of St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church in Forestville. She enjoyed baking, playing cards and dancing.

She married Edward Detgen on June 29, 1946 at Grindstone City Methodist Church. Edward preceded her in death on October 9, 2014. Hilda was an energetic spirited lady who loved life and was nothing if not organized. She and Ed loved to travel with the Thumb Bums until they finally settled in Florida for the winters. They also went anywhere their grandchildren were in a spelling bee, a track meet, a football game or any other event where grandparents could be present and supportive. Hilda loved to entertain. She had dinner parties, big parties, birthday parties, square dance parties, holiday parties, and parties for no particular reason. Her dinners and pies were legendary. She was always ready to cook something for someone. Hilda was creative and “craft-sie†and an avid quilter. She was competitive and liked a good card game and a difficult puzzle. We picture her passing to the other side and saying “Supper is ready!â€

Mary Barbara Louis Jurges, age 81, of Bad Axe, passed away at her home under hospice care with her family at her side. Her Lord and Savior called her home after a long illness. Mary was born September 27, 1937 in Harbor Beach, daughter of the late Joseph and Eva (Brown) Morley. She married E. Duane Jurges on May 19, 1956. Mary worked at the Lerash Food Line, Kroger and Farmer Jack. Mary also owned a ceramic store for many years and was a certified instructor. Later, she went to work for Huron Behavioral Health, she retired in 2013. Member of Ubly First Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder for many years.

Calvin (Cal) Brown, age 95, of Bad Axe, passed away on October 15, 2018 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living Home in Bad Axe. Calvin was born July 30, 1923, in Bad Axe to the late Earl Brown and Mabel Clements Brown. Calvin attended Bad Axe Schools. He served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Nashville from 1943-1946. On April 20, 1950 Calvin married Violet McIntosh in Bad Axe. Together they raised 11 children. Cal worked as a truck driver for Blair Transit and Earl Smith Freight until his retirement in 1984. Cal enjoyed playing cards and working on old cars and buying/selling antiques. He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church/Saint Hubert Parish in Bad Axe.

Michelle was born on October 9, 1957 to the late Robert Hoyt and Joan (Farrell) Hoyt-Gallucci. She worked various jobs during her life. Michelle was a member of the Bad Axe Free Methodist Church and volunteered there. She loved animals of all kinds, especially her dog Daisy. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. On June 12, 1999, she married Elwood C. Kirkpatrick. He preceded her in death on May 16, 2016.

Kenneth R. Gregor, 78, of Elkton, passed away Friday, October 12, 2018 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Ken was born at home September 18, 1940 in Elkton to the late Harold and Beatrice (Foster) Gregor. He married Iva McLean on November 21, 1992 in St. Clair, where they made their home. When young he was an active member of the Elkton E.U.BChurch and graduated from Elkton High School in 1958. After high school he stayed home on the farm for two years and hauled milk. He joined the US Air Force from September 1960 to September 1964 as a helicopter crew chief mechanic. After the service he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and worked for Lockheed Aircraft as well as joining the Oklahoma Air National Guard and flew as a flight engineer on the large C-97 cargo airplane for two years. Leaving Tulsa he moved back to Michigan and flew helicopter commercially for 7.5 years. He moved to Port Huron and from 1974-1987 worked for Star Oil Company driving tanker trucks, after that he moved to St. Clair and from 1988-1992 worked for Baker Manufacturing in Marine City. There he met longtime employee Iva McLean, after a time they were married. Ken was laid off shortly after Iva was laid off, so they felt it was the right time to sell and move to Elkton on the home place with his dad. They took care of him until he died at age 94. Ken worked for Huron Tool and Engineering driving truck until retiring. He enjoyed listening to and watching Southern Gospel music. Ken and Iva really enjoyed camping and riding their motorcycle. He moved to go out to the shed and just tinker and take old items and fix them up. When something didn’t run right he would figure it out or at least try.

Leroy A. DaFoe, age 84 of Harbor Beach, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born on March 3, 1934 in Croswell to the late Phillip & Nellie (Turner) DaFoe. He and Doris Moutoux were united in marriage on June 12, 1954 in Port Huron. Leroy served in the US Army in Okinawa from 1956-1958. He was a retired employee of General Motors, retiring in 1990 after 23 years. In 1990, Doris and Leroy moved to Harbor Beach and managed the Huron Estates Mobile Home Village from 1993-2012. He was a Proud member of the Harbor Beach Lions Club, and Zion Lutheran Church. Leroy Enjoyed the Port Hope Seniors, Bowling, Hunting, Boating, and the Coffee Clutch at the Community House with his buddies.

Mrs. Vivian Marie Rumptz, 99, of Ubly, peacefully went to heaven on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 surrounded by her loving children at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. Vivian was born on July 24, 1919 in Ruth to the late Frank and Clara (Plevnia) Leppek. She attended the Duda Country School in Sigel Township and St. Mary Catholic School in Parisville for one year where she made her First Communion. She met the love of her life, Clarence, at the Arcadia Ballroom in Parisville. They were united in marriage on Nov. 20, 1937 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. He preceded her in death on April 21, 2007. Vivian was a parishioner at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly for 81 years and was a lifelong member of the Good Shepherd Christian Mothers Confraternity. She worked at the Ubly Community Schools as a cook, retiring in 1981. Vivian loved her family and cherished all the time she was fortunate enough to spend with them. She loved to cook, bake, playing cards, polka dancing, going on casino trips and traveling with her husband once they were retired. Vivian will long be remembered as a loving wife and mother, and of course for her incredible baked goods

CADY, age 76 of Harbor Beach, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital, after a courageous fight with Parkinson's Disease. She was born on September 5, 1942 in Jersey County, IL, to the late Robert and Thelma (Wadlow) Weller. Jackie enjoyed making crafts, sewing, quilting and collecting antique dishes. She was an Elvis fanatic with an impressive collection of memorabilia. She took many opportunities to see Elvis impersonators. Jackie was a proud mother and even prouder grandmother who enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Mr. Jon T. Grifka, 49 of Ubly passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, October 9, 2018. Jon was born on January 15, 1969 in Ypsilanti to Ronald Grifka and Catherine Zawlinski. He never married. Jon attended Northside High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He worked as a short order cook for various restaurants in Indiana and Michigan. Jon had many friends and will be missed by all that loved him, including his feline companion, Bonni.
