He was preceded in death by his daughter, Anita Gehringer, and siblings Ray Swartzendruber, Lloyd Swartzendruber, and Iva Gascho.

Biography

P. George Swartzendruber, 88 of Pigeon, passed away Friday, February 28, 2014 at Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care. He was born in Bay Port on March 15, 1925 to Daniel and Mary (Maust) Swartzendruber, and graduated from the Snell School. On November 22, 1946 he was united in marriage to Jewel Dutcher at the Pigeon River Mennonite Church. They had been married 59 years when she passed away on July 11, 2006. For most of his lifetime, George was a farmer. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, and was Huron County president from 1978-1979. He was also a member of the original board of the Michigan Pork Producers when it was established, and served as its president. George was an avid reader and gardener. He was a faithful member of the Pigeon River Mennonite Church.

Biography

Archie H. Hyttinen age 89, of Lake Twp. died Saturday morning, March 1, at McLaren, Bay Region Hospital following a three month illness. He was born July 28, 1924 in Kelsey, MN to the late Henry and Katherine (Seppanen) Hyttinen, who emigrated from Finland. After high school, at the age of 18, during WWII, he served in the Aleutian Islands Campaign in Air Transport Command ATC 19 as an Aircraft Power Plant Mechanic. When the war ended, he enrolled in trade school and became a pattern maker, working at various shops in Denver supporting mining. On June 5, 1949, he was united in marriage to Jean L. Hill in Denver, CO. Then in 1952, they moved to Michigan, settling in the Detroit area supporting the automotive industry. In 1972, he started his own pattern and model making business in Royal Oak and worked until he retired in 1989, whereupon they moved to the home he had built in 1963, in Lake Township. He was the last surviving of seven children, Toivo Hyttinen killed in WWII, John Hyttinen, Leonard Hyttinen, Eino Hyttinen, Tyyne Matson and Ann Wilder. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. His many hobbies included making astronomical telescopes and traveling. He especially loved playing the violin at various places and his picture was occasionally in the newspaper playing the violin. Archie’s passion was making and playing violins at nursing homes and outdoor festivals, including the Octagon Barn log cabin events, Sleeper State Park and more. He had made many violins, never selling them, always given them to family or friends.

Biography

Ervin R. Ignash, 85, resident of Bad Axe, passed away peacefully at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on July 14, 1928, in Kinde, Michigan, one of eleven children born to Louis and Agnes (Matelski) Ignash. At the age of 16, he enrolled in Central Michigan University and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Education, later followed by an Ed.S. Graduate degree in Educational Administration from the University of Michigan. On July 27, 1951, he and Audrey Schefka were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Parisville, Michigan. In addition to his family and his faith, he had two other passions in life: education and roses. Mr. Ignash served as teacher, coach and principal of Bad Axe High School for forty years. He was proud of the fact that he not only could remember students’ names from many years past, but also that, by the time he retired in 1988, he had known generations of students within the school. He was always delighted when, years later, former students would drop by his home to say “Hi,” sometimes with their own children in tow. His other passion was growing roses. When his garden was at its fullest, he had 500 rose bushes, as well as numerous perennials, shrubs, and trees. He was a member of the Thumb Area Rose Society for several decades, serving as its President and Secretary, as well as a member of the Tri-Cities Rose Society, a Consulting Rosarian, and a horticultural judge in the Great Lakes District of the American Rose Society. In 2011, he became an Emeritus Judge and was awarded the Medal of Service.

Mr. Dennis K. Peruski, 56 of Ubly, passed away Tuesday evening, March 4, 2014 at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born on January 23, 1958 in Bad Axe to the late Frank and Marie (Lamke) Peruski. He married Katherine Hanson on December 22, 2006 in Bad Axe. Dennis attended Ubly High School. He was employed at Peruski Hardware and Electrical in Ubly for 43 years. He liked country and western music and watching the National Hot Rod Association. Dennis truly enjoyed tinkering with any kind of motorized vehicle.

Betty M. Scofield, 85, of Caro, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in Timberline Lodge following a long illness. She was born September 24, 1928 in Bad Axe to Daniel Ernest and Ina Mae (Townley) Reehl. She married William E. Scofield May 31, 1952 in Toledo, OH. He died July 5, 2001. Betty was a woman of great faith. She was a former member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Oregon, OH and a member of St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City. Betty donated her time generously collecting food donations from area businesses for the local soup kitchen to feed the homeless and needy in Oregon, OH. Betty and William loved their cockapoo Patches taking him with them everywhere

Biography

Evelyn R. Brookins, 97 of Owendale, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 6, 2014 with her three daughters at her side. Born March 2, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Levi and Rosa Heberly, and graduated in 1934 from Owendale High School. Following her graduation from Saginaw Business Institute, she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for several Saginaw area businesses including Montgomery Ward and Nuechterlein Insurance. She retired in the 1970’s from Miller Fire Protection in Bridgeport. Evelyn married Robert Brookins on May 6, 1943 at the Owendale Methodist Church. Robert passed away in August, 1989. Evelyn was a member of the Owendale United Methodist Church, serving as the financial secretary for many years. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, serving as their treasurer for several years, and was one of their Five Star women. Evelyn was quiet, unassuming, gentle, and gracious. She always pointed out the positive. She was a friend to all she met. She cherished time with her family and friends, and was a role model for them. She enjoyed hosting Camperpalooza every summer and family holidays. Evelyn enjoyed doing crosswords, playing board games, Tiger baseball, and fishing and spending time at the family cottage near Lupton.

(Thompson) Gerber. Keith and Parthenia Smith were united in marriage on July 23, 1948 in Flint. He was a graduate of Bad Axe High School. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946 and spent time in Italy. Keith was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Bad Axe. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories and tinkering around the farm, watching game shows and visiting with family and friends.

She was born in Plymouth on March 28, 1921, and was the daughter of the late Walter and Marjorie (Taylor) Kleinschmidt. She was a 1939 graduate of Plymouth High School. Marion was united in marriage to Richard L. Dast of Bay Port, in May 1946 after his return from military service during WWII. She was a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Pigeon (Berne). She enjoyed spending time with her family. Her many interests were in the arts, music, reading, crafts and travel.

Marveline J. Richards, age 90, of Elkton passed away peacefully Monday morning, March 10, at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. She was born June 3, 1923 at the home of her parents and only child of the late Frederick and Anna Marie (Bosse) Brolhost in Pemberville, Ohio. She graduated from Pemberville High School in 1941. On March 2, 1946 she was united in marriage to Scott Thorton Richards. They made their home on a farm near Elmore, OH, where she raised six children, managed a large garden and help with the farm. The family moved to Huron County near Pinnebog in 1961, then to Elkton in 1972. Gardening, both flowers and vegetables, was her joy and passion. Marveline served as elder and treasurer at the Chandler Presbyterian Church for over a decade. She also enjoyed traveling, playing scrabble with friends, quilting, sewing and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Roland A. Eichler, 90 of Pigeon, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. Born in Pigeon on November 25, 1923, he was the son of the late Alfred and Greta Mae (Wurtz) Eichler. On July 27, 1959 he was united in marriage to Marion Beulah Burton in Bay City. Roland lived on the small family farm and retired from farming but continued in the auto salvage business for many years. He enjoyed attending senior citizen dances, musical performances, tractor pulls, car races, and the Detroit Tigers. He also especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon, serving as Sunday School Secretary for several years.

Mrs. Kay M. Muma, 61 of Eastpointe and formerly of Ubly, passed away Friday evening, March 14 at her daughter Angela’s residence in Eastpointe. Kay was born on August 24, 1952 in Cass City to the late Alex and Olive (Stepka) Grifka. She married Raymond Muma on October 10, 1974 in Sandusky, MI. He preceded her in death on June 10, 1979. Kay was a graduate of Ubly High School. She was employed at Hills and Dales Hospital in Cass City as a cook for 15 years until 1997 when she began working at Deckerville Die Form Kay worked there for 10 years before retiring in 2007. She enjoyed computer games, trips to casinos, cribbage, pinochle, and crossword puzzles. She liked listening to audio books as well as reading books. Kay cherished and truly enjoyed traveling with her family and friends.

He graduated from Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port High School in 1963. He married Veronica J. Hewlett on June 29, 1974 at the Caseville United Methodist Church. He spent 31 years working at MOCO in Caseville, where he worked as the head of shipping & receiving until 1999. He spent many years repairing small engines, a trade he learned from his father. He was a member of the Caseville Methodist Church and a former member of the Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed Nascar, fishing, and yardwork.

Judith A. Bannick, age 85, of Elkton went home to her Lord, Tuesday, March 18, and is now reunited with her husband, Gustave. She was born October 8, 1928 in Wheeling, West Virginia and moved to Michigan shortly after birth. Judy graduated from Elkton High School in 1946. Shortly after high school she married Gustave Bannick. Judy was a homemaker and mother, raising eight children, the youngest ones on her own after her husband passed away April 17, 1977. She was a hard worker and was well known for cooking and wonderful baked goods. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elkton and loved having her family around.

Mildred Emma Elizabeth Bolzman, age 94 of Pigeon, and formerly of Sebewaing, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Country Gardens in Pigeon. Mildred was born January 8, 1920 in Kilmanagh, and was daughter of the late Leonard and Martha (Fibranz) Kundinger. She married Paul E. Bolzman on February 16, 1941 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. Paul passed away June 4, 1994. Mildred enjoyed square dancing, gardening, playing cards, setting puzzles, reading, and playing the harmonica by ear. Mildred helped her husband on the family farm, and loved taking care of her flower garden while living there. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Berne (Pigeon), and a former member of New Salem Lutheran Church, Sebewaing.

Roberta A. Stahl, 84, of Caseville, died Friday, March 21, 2014 at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw. Roberta was born in Lake Twp. on December 17, 1929 to the late Robert and Vivian (Bostwick) Heasty. She graduated from Pigeon High School. On October 12, 1951 she married Arthur Stahl at the Caseville United Methodist Church. Together they built their home on Main Street in Caseville where they lived their entire married life and raised two sons. She worked as a waitress in several Caseville restaurants. She was involved in the community with the Caseville American Legion Auxiliary and the Historical Society. She was an active longtime-member of the Caseville United Methodist Church, where she was instrumental in the church’s pasty making fundraiser.
