Durrell "Bud" Steadman, age 89, of Bad Axe passed away on Friday, April 25, 2014 at Meadow Lanes in Bad Axe. He was born on August 12, 1924 in Sigel Township, son of the late Stanley and Grace (McKichan) Steadman. He married Neomia Wise on June 20 1964 in Bay Port MI. She preced him in death on October 20, 2010. Bud worked for GM Buick in Flint. He served in the US Army in Germany, receiving two silver stars. He also served in the Korean War as a paratrooper also receiving two silver starts. He was an avid hunter and a great shuffle-board player.

Denise Kelly St. John, 50, of Caseville, died Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Covenant Cooper Hospital in Saginaw. Denise was born April 28, 1963 in Royal Oak to the late Richard W. Kilbourn Sr. and Marilyn Jean (Rowe) Kilbourn. She graduated from Madison Heights Lamphere High School in 1981. On June 18, 1983 she married Ronald Douglas St. John in Royal Oak. She has lived in Caseville permanently since 1992. She and her husband currently own and operate Shakers Ice Cream. She loved her family and her pets, especially doting on her grandchildren and anxiously awaiting the birth of her daughter’s baby in June.

Cindy L Farver age 57, of Elkton died Wednesday morning April 23, at Huron Medical Center following a long time battle with MS. She was born December 1, 1956 in Pigeon to the late Lee and Ruth (Proudfoot) Chappel. Cindy grew up near Pinnebog and was a 1974 graduate of Laker High School. On July 27, 1974, she was united in marriage to Brion B. Farver at the Pinnebog United Methodist Church. Cindy was a stay at home mother raising four children. She enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. She was an avid Detroit Tiger fan and especially loved having her grandchildren nearby.

Mrs. Georgeann T. Booms, 78 of Ubly and formerly of Minden City, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 19, 2014 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. She was born on May 27, 1935 in Minden City to the late George and Agnes (Messing) Hessling. She married Gerald Booms on June 11, 1955 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. Georgeann was a graduate of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School in Ruth. She worked on the family farm and was a bus driver for 37 years. She enjoyed trips to Branson, MO with her husband. She enjoyed quilting lap blankets for the area long term care facilities. She also enjoyed gardening and playing euchre. Georgeann truly cherished her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Pam graduated from Laker High School in 1974 and has lived in Huron County all her life. On November 25,1983, she was united in marriage to Fredrick Baur. He preceded her in death in 2008. Pam was a homemaker and housewife, she enjoyed doing picture puzzles, crossword and word find puzzles and following sprint car racing. She was an avid reader mostly western novels and watching westerns on TV.

George W. Shepherd, age 90, resident of Bad Axe, formerly of Elkton, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. He was born February 1, 1924 in Port Huron to the late James R. and Martha (Badgley) Shepherd. George was united in marriage to Florence Shave on January 20, 1945 at St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope by Rev. Kurt Lokhaman. He attended the Dobson Rural County School. He grew up and lived in the Port Hope and Elkton area for much of his adult life .George did several jobs in his lifetime including farming, was a founding member of the Team One Credit Union, was employed at Active Industries and had strong union ties. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. George enjoyed bowling and playing cards.

Francia was born on July 12, 1928 in Santiago, Dominican Republic, to the late Emilio and Sarah (Hungria) Ginebra. She and Robert Dutcher were united in marriage on July 1, 1954 in the Dominican Republic. Francia taught Spanish to Harbor Beach Children for many years. She also enjoyed embroidery, teaching needlepoint, and painting.

Biography

Norman A. Leitch, age 89, of Pinnebog died Monday evening, April 14, at McLaren Bay Region Hospital, Bay City. He was born February 19, 1925 in Colfax Twp. at the home of his parents, the late Henry and Myrtie (Haley) Leitch. On January 17, 1953 he was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Morgan at the Pinnebog Methodist Parsonage. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Redford Twp. where they raised their four children. Norm was a WW II Army veteran, serving with the 10th Mountain Infantry, Ski Troops, 86th Regiment in Italy. He went to work at Chrysler Corp when he returned, starting as a sweeper working his way up to Chief Operator of the Power House. In August of 1987, he retired and they moved back to Huron County where they grew up. Dorothy preceded him in death March 27, 2000. Norman was a member of the Pinnebog United Methodist Church and VFW Post 116, Bad Axe. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, camping and traveling all over the US with Dorothy. Norm was an excellent bee keeper supplying honey to his Pinnebog area neighbors and was a big fan of western novels and movies. He was a generous man always willing to help when needed, and loved time spent with his family and friends.

Ervin Sadro, 78, of Austin Township, passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. He was born on July 29, 1935 in Huron County, the son of Leonard and Myrtle (Groth) Sadro. He was united in marriage to Rosella Young on October 8, 1955 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Frieberg, Michigan. Ervin graduated from Ubly in 1954. He worked at Earl C. Smith Trucking for twenty years and also at Parker Motor Freight. Ervin’s hobbies included hunting, fishing and playing cards. He was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Frieberg.

A celebration of Joyce’s life will take place on May 3, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Harbor Beach at 2pm. Family and friends may gather at the church from 12:30 to the time of service. Arrangements made through the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach

She will be dearly missed by her husband Richard and their 4 children and families, Beth Ann Welker (Alfred) of Harbor Beach, Paul (Theresa) of Valley View, Ohio, Michael (Sharon) of Harbor Beach, Daniel (Rory Murguia) of Aiken, South Carolina as well as her brother Mark Christenson (Ann) of Wales, Michigan. Joyce was so loved by her 7 grandchildren, Jennifer, Andrew, Zachary, Gabriel, Maya, Jade and Leah as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews. She is also greatly missed by her Cocker Spaniel, Bailey

Biography

Joyce A. Schmalz, age 79 of Harbor Beach, passed away April 14, 2014 surrounded by her family. Joyce was born on April 5, 1935 in Port Huron, Michigan to the late Lewis and Phyllis (Stapleford) Christenson. Joyce and Richard Schmalz were united in marriage on October 23, 1954. Joyce brought joy and laughter to everyone she met. She was devoted to her family and the “favorite” aunt to many. Professionally Joyce was a medical transcriptionist for 45 years, beginning her career at Port Huron General Hospital while her husband was in the US Army stationed in Korea and ending her career with retirement from Huron Medical Center in 1999. Joyce and Richard enjoyed traveling in their motorhome with family and friends. Her most favorite trips were to Sault St. Marie where she could enjoy watching the freighters go by like she did as a child growing up on the St. Clair River. Joyce was an avid bird watcher and loved the blooming of her flowers in the spring. She was a devoted Detroit Tigers fan and enjoyed a good game of “31” with her grandchildren. We celebrate the 59 years Joyce and Richard spent together and the wonderful family they raised.

Order, Martha Conroy, Agnes “Dottie” Collard Frances Schock and Sophie Abraham.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at St. Isidore Parish, St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. Rev. Todd Arnberg will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly on Monday from 1:30 until 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church in Parisville. Biography

Mrs. Anna M. Abraham, 101 of Port Austin and formerly of Minden City, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living in Bad Axe. Anna was born on December 13, 1912, in Ubly to the late Frank and Mary (Borowicz) Kulish. She married Casimer “Cass” Abraham on January 16, 1933 at St. John Church in Ubly. He preceded her in death on March 8, 1998. Anna was a graduate of the Hogsback Country School. After school, Anna farmed with her family. She was also a member of the St. Mary Church of Parisville since 1933, and was a life long member of the St. Mary Rosary Sodality and the Daughter of Isabella Fidelis Regina Circle #608 of Bad Axe.

Biography

Archie Vigenski, 92, resident of Lincoln Township, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. He was born April 12, 1922 in Bad Axe son of Michael and Catherine (Zimpkoski) Vigenski. He married Bernadine Cornett on October 5, 1946, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dwight. Archie lived in Huron County his entire life. He was an avid Detroit Tigers fan, loved the outdoors, gardening, playing cards with his grandchildren and spending time with family and friends. He served in the United State Army during World War II for four years. He worked at Tower Automotive, farmed and also worked at IGA in Bad Axe after retirement.

Also surviving her are 13 great nephews and nieces as well as 11 great-great nephews and nieces. In addition to her parents, LaVerda was predeceased by her brother Willard Young, his wife Uleta, and a great-great nephew.

LaVerda M. Young, 96 lifelong resident of Elkton, died Sunday, April 13, in Haslett, Michigan. She was born April 16, 1918 at the home of her parents, the late Harry and Susan (Steinman) Young in Oliver Township, Huron County, Michigan. She attended the Flowing Well School and graduated from Elkton High School in 1936. LaVerda worked at the Elkton Post Office for a short period of time and retired from the Elkton Medical Clinic after 32 years of service. She was a long time member of the Elkton Missionary Church, the Women’s Missionary Society and Elkton Hobby Club. LaVerda enjoyed reading, scrap booking, writing letters, gardening, traveling and spending time with her family.

Erna F. Finkel, age 96, formerly of Port Hope, passed away Friday, April 11, 2014 at her daughter’s home under hospice care. She was born on January 7, 1918 to the late August and Louise (Young) Rink in Port Hope. Erna and Ferdinand Finkel were united in marriage on September 21, 1940 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Port Hope. He preceded her in death on October 2, 2011. Erna was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Port Hope. She enjoyed playing cards, doing puzzles and bird watching.

Shane A. Pettit, 22, of Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, died Friday, April 11, 2014. He was born on September 23, 1991 in Rochester Hills, son of Mark and Clarice (Jandreski) Pettit. Shane graduated from Lake Orion High School in 2010. He attended Oakland Community College. Shane entered the United States Air Force in February of 2012 and served his entire enlistment at Andrews Air Force Base working in telecommunications.

Barbara M. Urban, 86, of Cass City, died following a long illness Thursday, April 10, 2014 in her home with her family by her side. She was born December 31, 1927 at home in Grant Township to Clarence and Leanora (Whidden) Shantz. She married Floryan Joseph Urban June 7, 1947 in Bay City. He died January 31, 2014. Barbara graduated from Owendale High School. She helped run the family dairy farm along with her husband. Barbara loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed doing crafts such as crewel and embroidery and working in her flower gardens. Barbara also loved animals especially her cats and she enjoyed watching the birds these last few years.

Eileen E. Fabyan, age 85, of Bad Axe, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 19, 1928 in Bad Axe, daughter of the late George and Susan (Holz) Ney. She married Stephen Fabyan on June 7, 1947 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. He preceded her in death on December 28, 1993. Eileen was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and enjoyed bingo, fishing, bowling, and playing cards with family and friends. She especially liked spending time with her loving grandchildren. Eileen held a deep love and affection for her family, and her family held the same esteem toward her.

Preceded by: his siblings; Freida Hazel, Harold Gerstenschlager, Clara Gerstenschlager, Wilfred Steadman, and Leo Steadman.

Biography

Alton Gerstenschlager, age 88 of Bad Axe, passed away on Tuesday at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. He was born on May 28, 1925 in Sigel Township, son of the late Joseph and Matilda (Wenland) Gerstenschlager. Al was a farmer all of his life, raising dairy and beef cattle. He served as a trustee for Verona Township, retiring at the age of 82.
