Viola is survived by her husband Wayne Church of Filion; two sons, Kenneth (Brenda) Church of Kinde, Randy (Carmen) Church of Kempner, Texas; one daughter, Anesa (Greg) Ruthig of Ubly; four grandchildren, Jason and Nicole Church, Rande Sue Krozek and Alyssa Church; sisters, Lucille Paionk, Port Austin, Patricia (Richard) Limbacher of Port Sanilac; brothers, Myron (Joyce) Lamke of Ubly, Marvin (Sally) Lamke of Ruth; several nieces and nephews. Viola was preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Irene Lamke of Parisville and brother-in-law, Adam Paionk.
Viola A. Church, 72, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012 at McLaren Bay Region, Bay City. She was born on April 14, 1940 in Minden City to Ted and Irene Lamke. Viola married Wayne L. Church on May 20, 1961, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Parisville. They shared over 51 years together celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2011. In her early years she worked at Hamill Seat Belt Factory in Bad Axe and retired after many years of working for the Kinde North Huron School District. Viola was a very active member of the St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Kinde where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, however, her love was teaching the church’s youth as a religious education teacher for many years. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved being outdoors, feeding the birds, doing all kinds of crafts and spoiling her dog, Rocky.

His survivors include four sisters: Della Trudgen, Lillian (Willard) Williams, and Suzanne Schember, all of Pigeon and Mabel Herman of Owendale; and two sisters-in-law, Genevieve Herman of Lansing and Eileen Herman of Pigeon. Paul is also survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Elmer, Gilbert and Donald Herman
Born in Yakima, Washington on September 22, 1931, Paul was the son of the late Rev. Allen G. and Mabel E. (DeGroat) Herman. Paul lived in Pigeon at the home of Betty and Darrell Rapson and worked at Thumb Industries for many years. He also cared for several yards in the community and rode his bicycle throughout town. Paul especially enjoyed stopping at the Dutch Kettle daily for a slice of fresh pie and a cup of coffee. He faithfully attended Salem United Methodist Church for many years.

Mr. Schmidt is survived by his wife, Susan; five sons: Joseph (Melanie) Schmidt Jr., Buck Schmidt, Edward Schmidt, Scott (Penny) Schmidt, Shawn Schmidt; one daughter: April (Matthew) Woolner; one foster son: Joseph (Caterna) Poleno III; four brothers: Richard (teresa) Schmidt. Tim (Sheri) Schmidt, George (Donna) Schmidt, John (Tracy) Schmidt; six sisters: Judy (Graydon) Campbell, Sue Schember, Doris (Mark) Foor, Kathleen Schmidt, Donna Schmidt, Diane (Virgil) Rifenbark; one sister-in-law: Pamela Schmidt; and mother-in-law, Louise Walsh. He also leaves behind fifteen grandchildren, four great grand children, six foster grand children, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Edward and Lillian Schmidt; his daughter, Jeannie M. Schmidt; his grandson, Hezekiah Schmidt; two brothers, Ronald R. Schmidt, David Schmidt; one sister, Dorothy Kubacki; one brother-in-law, Edwin Schember; and father-in-law, Raymond Walsh.
Joseph A. Schmidt, age 64, of Ubly, passed away Monday morning, December 31, 2012, at home surrounded by loved ones, after a long battle with cancer. Joseph is a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served in United States Army’s 49th Scout Dog Division. He was honorably discharged with several medals including a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Born on January 19th, 1948, he was a son of Edward and Lillian (Bauss) Schmidt. He grew up in Bad Axe, Graduating from Bad Axe High School. Joseph married Susan L. Walsh on November 18th, 1967at St. Ignatius Catholic Church of Argyle. They made their home and raised their family in Ubly. During his years, Joseph was employed at local thumb business’s including Liberty Tool, U.S. Manufacturing, and Thumb Area Transit in Bad Axe. Joseph was deeply committed to his faith. He formerly served as a church deacon on a church board and taught Sunday school. Currently, he and his wife Susan attended the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Harbor Beach. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, pheasant hunting with his Brittany Spaniels, knife collecting, and golf. Joseph’s biggest hobby was reading. He was an avid reader of science fiction, adventure, westerns, and the bible.

He was born May 7, 1947 in Bad Axe to the late William and Anne (Gibbons) Durr. Bill attended Ferris State College. He also served in the United State Navy during the Vietnam Era. Bill was employed at General Motors for 28 years, retiring in October of 2 009. He also owned the Pub Bar in Caro for 37 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, movies, boating and bowling.

Lyle Shetler, 80, of Pigeon, passed away from heart failure on a family vacation in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday, December 29, 2012. Lyle was born in Pigeon on December 27, 1932 to the late Omar and Katie (Kipfer) Shetler. Lyle graduated from Hesston High School in 1951 and then attended Hesston College. He was united in marriage to Betty Burkholder on December 29, 1952 in Harper, Kansas. Lyle spent his life working in the family business, Shetler Plumbing & Heating, started by his father Omar Shetler. Lyle was active in, and past president of the Michigan Plumbers’ & Mechanical Contractors’ Association and the Rotary Club of Pigeon. Lyle was actively involved with the Gideons for 45 years. For 25 years Lyle directed the Pigeon Community Men’s Chorus. Lyle gave much of his time to his church, Michigan Avenue Mennonite Church in Pigeon. Lyle was an avid golfer.

Virginia M. Maurer, 89, of Bad Axe passed away Dec.27, 2012. She was under Hospice Care and the Loving Care of the Staff of Home Sweet Home of Pigeon. Virginia was born September 8, 1923 to John and Stella (Smalley) Kubacki of Ubly, Mich. She attended the Tyre School and Ubly High School. On September 8th 1941 she married Ervin Maurer. They lived in Detroit until his deployment into the military, and later moved to Colorado until 1945 when they bought a farm near Verona. She was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Smith Corners since 1946 and was an active member of the Altar Society for many years. She spent the remainder of her life a mother, homemaker and farm wife. She enjoyed bowling, cards, golf, traveling and spending time with the family.

Surviving are three sisters; Beatrice (Betty) Orr of Livonia, Gertrude (Trudy) Schaefer of Valparaiso, IN, Marion (Jerry) Bramschreiber of Peyton, CO; sister-in-law, Connie Woelke of Millington; brother-in-law, Paul Leithart of Columbus, OH; long-time traveling companion, Douglas VandenBerg of Grand Rapids; fifty nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and a host of friends. Preceding him in death was his twin brother, Theodore (Ted) and his sister, Mildred Leithart.
Arthur attended Cross Lutheran School and graduated from Pigeon High School in 1945. He attended Capital University in Columbus, Ohio; leaving the University to take employment with the U. S. Postal Service in Pigeon. In 1953, he was recruited by Dr. C. A. Scheurer to become Administrator of Scheurer Hospital and Office Manager of the Pigeon Clinic. After almost thirty years with Scheurer Hospital, he was named Administrator of the Huron County Medical Care Facility, where he remained for thirteen years. In 1998 and again in 2000, he served as Interim Administrator of the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility in Caro. His 58 year career in Health care administration ended upon resigning as a Corporate Compliance Officer at the Lapeer County Medical Care Facility. Art was a life-long member of Cross Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school, was in the choir and served several terms on the church council. He chaired the building committee for the new church in 1980 and the new school in 2000. Throughout his lifetime he was active in his community. He was a member and past president of the Pigeon Rotary Club. He was a Boy Scout and 4-H leader, organized the community choir that presented The Messiah several years and directed high school and summer stock theatre during the 50’s. He was a charter member of the Pigeon Historical Society and served as secretary since 1998. In 2000 he was honored by the Historical Society of Michigan with an Award of Merit for his extensive collection of local historical documents, photographs, newspaper articles and artifacts now on display at the Pigeon Historical Museum. In 1956 and 1959, he purchased acreage one mile south of Pigeon; built his home and began development of the neighborhood known as Camelot Woods. In 1974, he purchased the Moore bridge from its site on Caseville Road and the following year had it moved to its present location to open building lots on the west side of the Pigeon River. He traveled extensively visiting forty-five countries on five continents. He has corresponded from time to time with over seventy-five persons in twenty-five countries, and continued the relationship with many of these friends until his death.

Donald "Toby" Lee White, formerly of Bad Axe passed away September 23, 2011. He was born on July 15, 1933 in Bad Axe. He grduated from Bad Axe High School and Michigan State University. He was self employed in the Detroit area, retiring in 1955 and moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
