Biography

Mrs. Eleanor C. Wasielewski, 98 of Tyre, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2013 at the Huron Medical Center of Bad Axe. Eleanor was born on February 20, 1914 in Parisville to the late Joseph and Josephine (Gliniecki) Ertman. She married Theodore Wasielewski on November 10, 1934 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Freiburg. She preceded her in death on September 9, 1976. Eleanor attended high school in Hamtramck. She worked at Dominick General Store in Tyre for years and was a homemaker. Eleanor was a parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville since 1980 where she was a member of the St. Mary Rosary Sodality. She assisted with the parish fish fries at St. Ignatius Church in Freiburg. She enjoyed gardening and playing pinochle, euchre and bingo.

Ida was predeceased by one son, Guy Bailey, and brothers and sisters, Rita, Robert, Guy, Inez, and Edward. Ida was also blessed to have many nephews and nieces who enjoyed her company over the years.

Biography

Ida Elvin, 94, former longtime resident of Colfax Township, peacefully passed from this world on Friday, February 1, 2013, while residing in Chesaning Nursing Care Center in Chesaning, Michigan. Ida was born Ida Carli on May 13, 1918, in Labelle, Pennsylvania, to Agostino and Mary Carli. The family moved to Michigan in 1930. Ida first married Shirley Benjamin Bailey, of Ubly, Michigan, in 1936. Following the death of Shirley Benjamin Bailey Ida married Elwin Maxwell in 1941, in Washington Township of Sanilac County. Ida and Elwin owned, and operated, a farm there until his passing in 1963. Ida later married James Morgan, and following his passing, married Arnold William Elvin in August of 1971 in Bad Axe, Michigan. Together they lived on a farm in Colfax Township. Arnold Elvin predeceased her in 2006. Ida was well known for her flowers that she proudly grew and her passion for cooking all types of dishes. Ida was also involved in ceramics, and for many years would be part of the daily group of friends that would meet at McDonalds

Biography

Philip L. Robinson, 71, of Cass City died following a short illness Friday, February 1, 2013 in his home. He was born September 26, 1941 in Bad Axe to Clifford and Gladys (Dickinson) Robinson. He married Sandra Kathryn Janowiak May 25, 1963 in Ubly. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. Philip graduated from Ubly High School in 1960. He joined the U.S. Army serving from 1960 until 1962, spending 18 months in Germany. He began his work at General Motors, Pontiac in 1963 where he worked as a production worker retiring after over 30 years. After retirement Philip attended Barber School in Flint. He owned and operated his own barber shop in Cass City for 19 years retiring a second time in 2011. Phil was a member of Cass City VFW Post #3644, St. Pancratius Catholic Church and the Cass City-Gagetown Knights of Columbus Council #8892. He was a former member of the Cass City Lions Club. Phil enjoyed playing softball on the Sunday and Monday Leagues. He played on the McCarty Trucking, Tyll's, and Colony House teams. Phil enjoyed baseball and managed and coached little league, Babe Ruth league, girls little league and girls traveling league. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and belonged to the Wolverine Association Horse Shoe Club and the M46 Association Horse Shoe Club winning two state titles. He also enjoyed bowling and golfing on the Monday Night Senior League, especially golfing with his grandson, Ryan.

RUBY D. KIVEL, age 90 of Harbor Beach, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. She was born on December 16, 1922 in Owendale, to the late Jay and Maggie (Welsh) Dickinson. Ruby and Orville Kivel were united in marriage in 1941. He preceded her in death on December 14, 1966. Ruby worked at the Polewach Store for 36 years. She was a faithful member of the Community of Christ Church, and enjoyed crocheting, flower gardening and dancing.

Bernice E. Polega, 85 of Bay City, formerly of Bad Axe died unexpectedly Thursday, January 31, 2013 at the Carriage House in Bay City. She was born the daughter of the late Albert and Susie (Inda) Zimpkoski on April 12, 1927 in Dwight Township. Bernice and Floyd Polega were married on Janaury 20, 1945 in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Port Austin by the Rev. Joseph Dudek. Floyd preceded her in death on November 5, 1996.

Delmer McAlpine, age 77, of Elkton died Tuesday afternoon at Huron Medical Center, Bad Axe. He was born October 20, 1935, in Caro to the late George and Iva (Kipfer) McAlpine and moved to Elkton with his family in his youth. After returning home from his service in the US Army for two years, Delmer began working at Active Industries in 1964, where he was employed for 47 years retiring August 3, 2001. On August 4, 1962, he was united in marriage to Marjorie “Marty” Geath at the Elkton Methodist parsonage and lived and raised their family in Elkton. He was a long time member of the Elkton Lions Club. Delmer enjoyed hunting, bowling and playing pool. He had been going to the Owendale Speedway since it opened in 1964 first as a driver and pit crew and then as a spectator. He was also an avid NASCAR fan.

Biography

Arthur “Art” Kriewall was born June 5, 1929, at Port Hope, Michigan, to Ralph Edward and Hulda Augustia (Pochert) Kriewall. He died Monday, January 28, 2013, in Owasso, Oklahoma, at the age of 83 years. Art was reared and educated in Michigan and graduated with the Port Hope High School Class of 1947. He continued his education attending Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where he earned his degree in electrical engineering. He was a veteran of the armed forces having served his country honorably as a pilot with the United States Air Force. Art was married June 20, 1959, in Detroit to Sharon Lee Clancey. He spent most of his working life as an electrical engineer with McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a faithful member of Faith Lutheran Church in Owasso. After his retirement, Art worked as a bus driver in Missouri and in Owasso for the school system. He enjoyed a variety of pastimes including working on cars and restoring vintage tractors.

Ryan grew up in the Elkton area and attended Laker Junior High until moving to Columbus, Texas in 2008. There he attended Columbus ISD, graduating in 2012. Shortly after graduating, he returned to Huron County. Ryan was a past member of St Columbkille Catholic Church, the Elkton Cub Scouts, Columbus FFA and was a cross country runner.

Stephen R. Smith, 52, of Caseville, died suddenly Monday, January 28, 2013 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Stephen was born May 13, 1960 in Detroit, Michigan. Stephen was the son of Patricia (Buchalski) Smith and the late Robert T. Smith. The Smith family moved to Caseville when Steve was in the third grade. He attended the Elkton Pigeon Bay Port Schools graduating in 1978 with a scholar/athlete award. He went on to get his bachelor's degree in construction management from Michigan State University. Steve was an avid sportsman having been a participant in four high school sports. His favorite and most accomplished sport was basketball. Stephen also loved his boat and spent many a summer evening fishing for walleye and perch. Steve began his career path at the age of 14 when he started working with his father’s construction company on a part time basis. He was a talented cabinet maker and designer. He moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in 2006 where he and his brother, Jeff, and sister-in-law Marcy started a wood products manufacturing plant. When he could no longer work in his business or enjoy his hobbies of woodworking or fishing due to his muscle disease, he moved back to Caseville in April of 2012, in the care of his parents.

Bernard "Bernie" Sullivan, age 85, of Bad Axe, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Huron Medical Center.in Bad Axe. He was born on April 21, 1927 in Sheridan Township, son of the late John T. and Frances (0'Henley) Sullivan. He married Helen McPherson, who preceded him in death. Bernie was actively involved with music and loved playing the violin. He was president of the Thumb Pioneer Dancers and started the Sandusky Senior Dance Group. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe and was the longest time member of the Bad Axe Knights of Columbus Council joining on March 10, 1946, thus a member for over 66 years. He served in the US Army.

Mr. Clemens “Clem” Ulfig, 88 of Parisville passed away Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Huron Medical Center of Bad Axe. Clem was born on February 2, 1924 in Paris Township to the late Peter & Victoria (Makowski) Ulfig. Clem was a graduate of the Sigel Country School. He farmed in Paris Township all his life and was a member of the National Farmers Association. He was a member of the Thumb Two Cylinder Club. Clem was a lifelong parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville where he belonged to the Usher’s Club and volunteered for the St. Mary Festivals for many years. He was the founder of the St. Mary Historical Museum in Parisville. Clem was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus member of the Bishop Babcock Assembly # 0487 of Bad Axe and a member of the Ruth Knights of Columbus Council # 3823. He loved fast pitch softball and played for many years when he was younger. He was an avid sports fan, especially for all local area schools. Clem truly loved to spend time visiting his relatives and friends.

Lillian Hunsanger, 100 of Madison Hts, formerly of Forestville and Harbor Beach, died Jan. 26, 2013 at The Arbor Inn Assisted Living Facility in Warren. Lillian was born on July 20, 1912 in Ruth to the late Frank and Edna (Richardson) Thompson. She married Jerome J. Hunsanger on February 13, 1931 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Palms. He preceded her in death on January 30, 1996. Lillian attended the Kelly Country School. She resided in Madison Heights from 1932 until moving to Forestville in 1972. She was a parishioner at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Madison Heights for 40 years. Lillian enjoyed visiting family and friends.

Biography

Marvin James “Red” Siewert, age 78 of Pigeon, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Born in Bay Port on August 1, 1934, he was the son of Henry J. and Alvira (Eden) Siewert, and was a 1953 graduate of Pigeon High School. On August 4, 1956 he was married to Kay Beyer, who preceded him in death on August 22, 2006. In his earlier years, Red worked at the Bay Port Stone Quarry and Kraft Plumbing Company. He owned and operated the Sunoco Gas Station in Pigeon for more than 30 years, and after closing it, worked for Quinn’s Shell Gas Station in Caseville. He also worked at Gary’s Auto in Elkton and Walsh Packing in Pigeon. For many years, Red was a member of the Winsor Township Fire Department. He was a Detroit Tiger fan, he was known as a great story teller, and he loved watching the boats on Saginaw Bay. Red was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Pigeon, where he had been active in the life of the church during his earlier years.

Biography

Keith N. Brown, 77, of Ubly, died following a short illness Tuesday, January 22, 2013 in McLaren Bay Region, Bay City. He was born June 6, 1935 at home on Cumber Road to Lloyd and Clara (Gibbard) Brown. He married Joyce Ann Lowe May 14, 1960 in Cass City. Keith was a dairy and beef farmer. He also operated a sawmill completing many custom projects for area friends and neighbors. Keith loved trains. He was a member of the Blue Water Michigan Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. He and Joyce enjoyed many Michigan train rides on the old trains. He enjoyed sports including all the Detroit teams. Keith loved watching his grandchildren play in their sports events. After retirement, Keith and Joyce were able to do a bit of traveling including trips to California and Texas. Keith was a talker. He made friends easily and loved to be with people and talk about what was going on in the world.

Biography

Tom was born in Pigeon on September 21, 1956 to George and Ruth (Weiss) Mohr, and graduated from Laker High School in 1974. He served in the U.S. Navy around the world on the USS Midway. After an honorable discharge in the state of Washington he moved to Colorado. Tom received an Associates degree in Solar Engineering Technology and went on to work on a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology before taking a position with Outotec North America as a Technical Specialist where he was still employed at the time of his death. Tom traveled all over the world with his position and was fond of telling of his travel and the personalities he met along the way. He collected souvenirs of his travels and loved to give gag gifts with sentimental meaning to family and friends.

During the time she lived in Florida she worked as a cook and was employed at Kohl’s Department Store and Walt Disney World in Orlando. She enjoyed doing cross word puzzles, music, art and drawing.

(Bernhardt) Engelhardt, in Kilmanagh, MI. He married Sharon K. Weippert on April 4, 1964 at St. John Lutheran Church-Kilmanagh. Dennis farmed all his life. His passions were farming, horses and his grandchildren. He was a member of the Brookfield Twp. Huron County Fair Board, and a lifelong member and Trustee at St. John Lutheran Church-Kilmanagh. He worked at Evans Automotive and the Sebewaing Sugar Factory.

She was born on July 17, 1938 in Port Hope to the late Herbert & Minnie (Pleiness) Hearit. She and William Scott were united in marriage on November 26, 1960 in Harbor Beach. He preceded her in death on April 6, 2012. Together they ran and owned Main Street Antiques in Port Hope. She enjoyed watching birds, gardening, and antiques.
