Iva M. Andrews, age 91, of Grant Twp. died Thursday morning, February 18, at her home while under hospice care. He was born December 17, 1924 at the home of her parents, the late Ezra and Hattie (Diebel) Abbe in Oliver Twp. and grew up on a farm in Oliver Twp. On January 1, 1942, she was united in marriage to Elmer Andrews at her parent’s home in Oliver Twp. They made the home on a farm in Grant Twp. where they raised their family. Iva was a farm wife all her life, but was also employed as an aide at the Huron County Medical Care Facility for over 10 years retiring in 1987. She was a very active member of the Owendale Community in Christ. She and Elmer loved all high school sports and was given “Friend of Youth Award” from the Owen-Gage Schools. She loved her flowers and enjoyed quilting, crocheting and knitting. She made hundreds of slippers for Clothe-A-Child over the years.

Mr. Michael E. Peruski, 40 of Ubly, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2016 at his residence due to an apparent heart attack. Michael was born on August 2, 1975, in Bad Axe to Thomas and Nancy (Mausolf) Peruski. Michael was a graduate of Ubly High School. After school Michael worked in masonry. He was a parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church of St. Isidore Parish of Parisville. Michael liked sports, playing baseball, bowling, fishing and darts. He loved playing with his nephews and new baby niece.

Lawrence C. “Bud” Ruhl, age 85 of Harbor Beach, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born on September 3, 1930 in Harbor Beach to the late Lawrence and Viola (Hunter) Ruhl. Bud served in the US Navy serving over seas from 1950 – 1954. He and Barbara Melick were united in marriage on October 6, 1951 in Harbor Beach. Bud worked as a pipefitter for the Huron Milling Company and later Hercules, Inc. He graduated from OLLH High School in 1949 and was named a Top Ten Athlete when the High School closed. He enjoyed coffee with the guys, driving his jeep, his never ending love for his dogs, moving snow with his tractor, and spending time with his family.

Gene was a 1955 graduate of Ubly High School. He was a 50 year member of Plumber’s Local 98 of Detroit, a retired Plumbing Contractor, Licensed Builder, and owned and managed apartment complexes. Eugene was an avid gardener and farm tractor enthusiast. He enjoyed socializing with family and friends and he was always ready to lend a hand to anyone. He was united in marriage on January 10, 1959 to Jeanette P. Lawson.

Arthur William Stahl, 93, of Caseville, died Friday, February 12, 2016 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Art was born November 30, 1922 in Bay Port to the late Arthur and Edith (Quinn) Stahl. He graduated from Bay Port High School in 1941. Art was a World War II veteran, having served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946. On October 12, 1951 he married Roberta Heasty at the Caseville United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on March 21, 2014. Art lived for 74 years in the home he built on Main Street, next door to the house he grew up in and two doors down from Stahl’s Standard Service Station which he owned from 1956 until his retirement in 1986. In addition to operating the service station, he had a successful business selling ice in summer and checking on cottages in winter. He served on the Caseville School Board of Education and was an active longtime member of the Caseville American Legion.

Phyllis A. Kreh age 77 of Grant Twp. near Elkton died Wednesday morning, February 10, at McLaren Bay Region, Bay City. She was born May 11, 1938 in Cass City to the late Carl and Lucille (Knechtel) Leckenby and graduate from Elkton High School in 1956. She then attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky for two years. On June 21, 1958, she was united in marriage to Lyle Kreh. They lived near Wakefield Corners for a couple of years before settling on the family farm south of Elkton. Phyllis worked at her mom’s restaurant at Wakefield Corner several years and part time as a secretary at Elkton School. She also had been a cook at the Lunch Bucket in Elkton for a while. She was a lifelong member of the Elkton United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, church choir and had served as church secretary for many years. Phyllis was also a member of the Aim High Farm Bureau Group and Club 59. Phyllis was a mainly homemaker. She loved to cook, watch cooking shows and home decorating shows. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved music.

Joanne E. Rifenbark, 82, of Bad Axe, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Huron County Medical Care Facility surrounded by her family. Joanne was born January 16, 1934 in Woodsfield, Ohio to the late Lloyd and Bessie (Turner) Allen. Joanne and her family moved from Ohio to Saginaw, Michigan in 1945. On December 25, 1951, Joanne Allen and Frank Rifenbark were united in marriage in Saginaw, Michigan. They had sixty one years of marriage together, until Frank preceded Joanne in death on May 4, 2013. She graduated from Saginaw High School in 1951. Joanne was employed for several years at the Hubbard Hospital in Bad Axe and worked at Bad Axe Schools as a cook until retirement. She was a member of the Bad Axe First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher. Joanne loved being with her family and watching her grandchildren grow. She also loved going camping and fishing.

Gregory Paul Silisky, 50, of Caseville, died Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Greg was born January 11, 1966 in Warren to Millie and the late Jerry Silisky. He attended Warren Schools. On July 29, 2000 he married Sally Brown at their home in Caseville. Greg worked 17 years for Advance Door as a sales rep for commercial and residential windows and doors before working for Sally’s Abstract for four years. He was a member of the Caseville Eagles Club, Caseville Rod and Gun Club, and the president of Thumb’s Up RC Flying Club. He enjoyed his motorcycle, spending time on the water and outdoors, and all things remote control. Since 2002 he has lived an active and full life in spite of major heart problems.

Grace L. Cilc, 90, of Caseville, died Friday, February 5, 2016 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Grace was born March 1, 1925 on the lower half of the Pointe Aux Barques Coast Guard property where her father was stationed. She was the third and last daughter born to Frank and Louise (Smith) Clancy. While young she moved about the Great Lakes area frequently as her father was stationed at various lighthouses and stations. During World War II she worked in a defense plant in Detroit. She married Joe Cilc Jr. on October 25, 1944 at the Caseville Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on July 24, 2012. Grace worked as a waitress in many local restaurants, including 20 years at the Bella Vista. She was an active community volunteer, proudly serving on the Oakwood Housing Commission. She was a charter member with both the Caseville Eagles Auxiliary and Caseville American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed crafting, traveling, gardening and her pets, especially Gidget and Holly.

Jason A. Miller, 36, of Gaylord, died Friday, February 5, 2016.He was born August 15, 1979, to Yvonne Miller. Jason was known to be a conversationalist, creating theories and philosophies on all things including the political and spiritual realm. Although not formally educated after graduation from Swan Valley High School in 1997 and one year at Northwood University, he loved learning, writing and reading. He appreciated the arts in all forms and films and was a painter. He enjoyed cooking for others. His favorite poet was Edgar Allan Poe and two of his favorite authors were Leo Tolstoy (Anna Karenina) and Fyodor Dostoevsky. He loved the outdoors, travel and adventure. He lived in the Keyes, however found it hard to adjust to “Island Time.” After his foot healed he had plans to travel to the Philippines. He was incredibly loyal to those he loved, as a son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was very forgiving and had an incredible sense of humor through his illness; strength and stubbornness which kept him working construction when he should have been off of his feet. He will be forever missed.

Sherry K. Bensinger, 65 of Ubly, passed away Thursday evening, February 4, 2016 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born on December 21, 1950 in Bad Axe, to the late Bruce and Onnalee (Rapson) Bensinger. Sherry was a graduate of Ubly High School. She attended cosmetology school. Sherry became a CNA and worked in many nursing centers throughout Michigan, including 20 years in Barbeau and ten years at Autumnwood in Deckerville. Sherry 1997 moved back to Ubly. For the last four years, Sherry has been keeping the children of Ubly Schools safe as one of the school’s crossing guards. Sherry attended the Free Methodist Church in Bad Axe before becoming a member of the Ubly United Methodist Church in Ubly. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and puzzles. Sherry loved taking care of her son, Ethan. She also loved her dogs and visiting with family and friends.

Beatrice was preceded in death by her husband Victor; six sisters, Teresa Lemke; Martha Goniwicha; Minnie Bismack; Gertrude Zulka; Grace Peruski; Phoebe Lemanski and one brother, Chester O’Parka.
Beatrice Lemanski, 94, life-long resident of Bad Axe, died Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Courtney Manor. Beatrice was born March 12, 1921 in Paris Township to the late Andrew and Martha (Peplinski) O’Parka. On November 9, 1940, Miss Beatrice O’Parka and Mr. Victor Lemanski were united in marriage in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Parisville, Victor preceded his wife in death on October 1, 2007. Beatrice was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. She was employed by Bloch and Guggenheim for many years. She enjoyed Bingo, playing cards, polka dancing and shopping.

Mr. James “Jim” Makowski, 48 of Kingston and formerly of Parisville, passed away unexpectedly Monday, February 1, 2016 in Kingston. Jim was born on August 19, 1967 in Bad Axe to Suzanne (Alexander) Makowski and the late Elmer “Jim” Makowski. Jim was a graduate of Harbor Beach High School. He was a veteran of the Army Reserves. He graduated college with a bachelor’s degree and became a school teacher. He also worked at various companies in Michigan and several other states. Jim enjoyed playing pool, cards and listening to his 80’s Rock. In his younger years, Jim enjoyed hunting and going ice fishing with his dad. Jim’s passion was tinkering with motorcycles and being able to ride them whenever he could.

Russell C. Bouchard, 87, of Bad Axe, MI passed away on January 23, 2015. Russell was born July 16, 1928 in Detroit, MI. As a teen, he moved to Bad Axe with his parents, the late Selma and Al Bouchard. In 1951, Russell met the love of his life, Delores Messing. They were married in 1952. Russell and Delores purchased a dairy farm and farmed with their 6 children until 1979. After retiring from farming, Russell worked for the Bad Axe Public Schools. He was a kind man and a hard worker which lead to him being awarded Employee of the Year while at the school. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as an usher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. During his retirement Russ loved to garden, travel, read, and he always enjoyed having a "good debate". He remained an active member in his Farm Bureau Club and enjoyed the many friendships made over the years.

ROBERT RALPH STANKE, age 60 of Harbor Beach, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016 at his home. He was born on May 25, 1955 in Harbor Beach to Susan (Hagedon) Stanke and the late Walter Stanke. Rob was an avid sports fan, cheering for the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Pistons, and The Detroit Lions. He enjoyed shooting pool, working in his little garden, and taking care of the dogs.

Helene Madej "MAY-DAY" age 66, of Sand Point died Wednesday, January 20, following multiple health problems. Helene was born October 11, 1949 in Wallach, Germany to the late Johannes and Hildegard (Hoeboer) Leiting. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1960 and then moved to the Pontiac area a short time later. She married Joseph Madej in 1969 and raised their family in Caseville. Joseph preceded her in death in August of 1985. Helene worked as a support specialist with Dept of Social Services in Bad Axe, retiring in 2009. After retiring, she enjoyed spending time with her children and their families in Michigan, Colorado and Virginia. She also enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and her little dog, Kay Kay.

Lena was born August 5, 1922 in Marysville, MI to the late Frank & Mae (Merchant) Koglin. She and Arthur Sengstock Sr. were united in marriage on February 7, 1942 in Port Hope. He preceded her death on December 10, 2006. She loved fishing, baking and putting together puzzles. Lena was a member of St John Lutheran Church of Port Hope.

Mr. Norman R. Lemanski, 86 of Bad Axe, passed away Tuesday January 19, 2016 at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. Norman was born July 10, 1929 in Harbor Beach to the late Barney and Agnes (Zurek) Lemanski. He married Theresa M. Lautner on October 18, 1952 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. She preceded him in death on April 19, 2015. Norman attended the Filmore Country School. He farmed all his life, retiring in 1995. Norman was employed at Active from 1955-1973. He was a member of the Bad Axe Knights of Columbus Council #1546. He was a parishioner at St. Mary Church of St. Isidore Parish in Parisville. Norman was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers

Donna Detgen, age 76, of Harbor Beach passed away January 18, 2016 at Courtney Manor Nursing Center of Bad Axe. She was born March 15, 1939 in Petersberg, MI, daughter of the late Elmer & Marguerite (Whittman) Wittkop. Donna was united in marriage to Henry Detgen Jr on February 7, 1970 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on September 9, 1982. Donna enjoyed reading, putting puzzles together and was chairperson of local fundraising for the American Cancer Society.
