Kay Marie (Stacer) Goebel,58, of Bad Axe, MI passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Sunday June 11, 2017 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Kay was born September 15, 1958 to Merlin and Magdalene (Holdwick) Stacer of Ruth, MI. Kay married Eric Goebel July 28, 1979 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Parisville. She graduated from Ubly High School in the Class of 1976. After High School she attended Baker College where she obtained an Associate’s degree in Accounting. After college, she then worked for Ruth State Bank. Kay served 24 years as the City Clerk for the City of Bad Axe where she dedicated her time to the best interest of the residents in the community. Kay enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, scrapbooking, and working with her flowers.

Hugh was preceded in death by his wife, Joleen, his parents Donald and Ruth and his sister, Susan (Clark) McNamee. His is survived by his son, Donald (Lynne) Clark, Valerie (Bruce) Gerhart and Kathy (Warren) Richter; along with seven grandchildren, Will, Allison and Lindsey Clark, Jennifer and Paul Gerhart, Clark (Anna Goldberg) and Lee Richter, and one great granddaughter, Sadie Joleen Goldberg Richter.
Donald “Hugh” Clark passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at the age of 82. He was born in Livonia, MI. Hugh was a wonderful father and grandfather (Papa). He created a lasting influence on the interests and vocations of his children and grandchildren, as they continue his legacy of love for nature, science, the environment and canoeing. Hugh was a science teacher for 39 years at Harbor Beach High School and took special delight in bringing his students a weekly taste of nature, having Euell Gibbons days each Friday. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a youth and was a Scout leader for 35 years, taking hundreds of young men on wilderness adventures and nurturing a love and respect for the outdoors. For his distinguished service to Scouting, he was bestowed the Silver Beaver Award. He wrote for decades a weekly article for the Harbor Beach Times called "Talk for the Table" and he was a proud graduate of Michigan State College, having marched in the 1954 Rose Bowl parade. Hugh was a member of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association, where he and Joleen developed deep friendships with fellow canoeists from around the country. He was also a master woodcarver who did thousands of basswood carvings never for personal or financial gain but for the pure joy of giving them away to relatives, friends and strangers. We are certain that many of the people reading this will feel a smile on their face because they have one or many of his carvings in their home.

Gerald E. Dekker, 81, of Caseville, died Saturday, June 10, 2017 at his home under hospice care. Jerry was born October 4, 1935 in LaSalle, Ontario to the late Benjamin and Bernadette (Chappus) Dekker. He graduated from Detroit’s MacKenzie High School in 1953. He married Beverly Rubikas on September 4, 1954 in Detroit; she preceded him in death December 31, 1993. He was the owner of D&S Die and Mold in Roseville until retiring in 1995. Having built a cottage on Saginaw Bay in 1965, he began splitting his time between his home in Caseville and winters in Naples, Florida after retiring. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially golfing, fishing, hunting and bowling. He was a member of Scenic, Caseville Eagles and St. Roch.

Terry L. Prosowski, 63, of Cass City, died Thursday, June 8, 2017 in St. Mary's of Michigan, Saginaw following a brief and unexpected illness. She was born July 13, 1953 in Detroit to William Earl and Ruth Lucille (Scott) Griffith. She married Alan Edward Prosowski October 26, 1974 in St. Clair Shores. Terry graduated from South Lake High School, St. Clair Shores in 1972. She worked for Basset Engineering and then General Cable for fifteen years. Terry enjoyed her part time job as a crossing guard for Cass City Public Schools and also worked part time for Erla's Grocery Store in the bakery. She was a good cook, known for her homemade potato salad and perch dinners. She enjoyed playing solitaire, gardening, working crossword puzzles and watching TV, especially Deadliest Catch and Food Network. Terry loved attending her children and grandchildren's school and sporting events. Together Terry and Al made cider and donuts each fall.

Doris Ann Bowers, 80, of Bad Axe, passed away suddenly at her home on the morning of her 80th birthday, June 4, 2017. She was born in Ruth, Michigan on June 4, 1937 to the late Bernard and Cecilia (Whipping) Holdwick. Doris was united in marriage to Russell K. Bowers, the love of her life, on October 19, 1957 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. He preceded her in death on March 1, 2012. Doris very much so loved her Lord and worshiped Him by going to church very often, praying the rosary on a regular basis, and she always prayed for those in needs. Doris would watch the Catholic Mass on television more than anything else. She said it kept her going and maintained her strong faith in God. Over the years, Doris enjoyed walking, playing cards, Bingo, and especially spending time with her beloved grandchildren. She was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church/St. Hubert Parish in Bad Axe, Tops Club Inc., Grindstone - Port Hope Sportsman’s Club, the Red Hat Society and the Bad Axe Senior Center. She was also a member of the Daughters of Isabella and named Daughter of the month twice in recent years.

WALTER E. PLEINESS, age 97 of Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Christensen Care AFC, Marlette, after a short illness with pneumonia. He was born on January 8, 1920 at the Family farm in Port Hope, to the late Herman, Sr. and Hannah (Nickel) Pleiness. Walter was a lifetime farmer. He was united in marriage to Bernetta Klemp on August 12, 1950 in Port Hope. She preceded him in death on July 27, 1992. Walter was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Port Hope, where he served as an elder and usher. Walter served in World War II, with the 792nd, Anti Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, where he saw wartime action in England, France, and Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a lifetime member of AmVets Post 115 of Port Hope, where he participated with bingo games, and was a Flag Carrier in Parades until the age of 90. He was honored to place Memorial Day Flags on the cemetery graves. He was a member of the Port Hope Retirees, and enjoyed playing euchre, the Detroit Tigers, hunting, fishing, bowling and his farm. He enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The Family would like to say a special thank you to Holly at Christensen Care AFC, for the wonderful care she gave their Dad in the last few weeks and his buddies Jerry and Bob at the care center for watching over him.

Marie E Eby age 91, of Elkton passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 31, at Scheurer Long Term Care, Pigeon. She was born November 14, 1925, in Detroit to the late Fred and Gladys (Moore) Kirk. On July 20, 1946, she was united in marriage to Edwin “Ted” Eby at the Coranado Baptist Church in Detroit. They made their home at the south limits of Elkton, raising four children. Marie received her Bachelor’s degree in education from Central Michigan University and was employ by the Laker School System for 20 years retiring as an elementary teacher. Marie was very artistic and enjoyed painting, quilts gardening, fishing and singing in the choir at the Elkton Missionary Church where she was a very active member.

Billy E. Bollinger, 89, of Caseville, died Sunday, May 28, 2017 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Billy was born in Bollinger County, Missouri on November 8, 1927 to the late Earl and Ethel Bollinger. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He married Martha Uelsmann on July 3, 1947 in Cape Giradeau, Missouri. She preceded him in death on February 5, 2003. Billy moved to the Detroit area in 1968 and worked for A.O. Smith as an engineer. In 1989 he moved from Royal Oak to Caseville. In retirement he was able to enjoy boating, animals and helping people however he was able. He was a proud member of the Caseville Fraternal Order of Eagles, where he served many years as Chaplain.

Willet “Pete” H. Schmidt, 92, of Port Austin, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2017 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born in Bad Axe on April 12, 1925 to the late Harry and Stella (Pfaff) Schmidt. On June 14, 1946, he married Jean M. Finan. She preceded him in death on June 18, 2008. Pete graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1943, attended Alma College, and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 – 1946. He was a member of the Frank Horetski Post 499 and VFW Post 116, the Lions Club, Bird Creek Golf Club and Verona Hills Golf Club. He was postmaster in Port Austin before taking a position at Port Austin State Bank, where he was employed for 50 years. At the time of his death, he was Chairman of the Board. He was an outstanding athlete in high school, leading Bad Axe High School in football, basketball, and baseball. He was one of the first in the area to shoot a one-handed shot in basketball. As an older player in the Huron County Baseball League, he was approached by Detroit Tiger scouts. He continued to be an avid golfer, still playing at age 91. He was given an award by the MHSAA for over 20 years of officiating high school athletics, and he coached youth basketball and baseball for many years. Pete also enjoyed woodworking in his spare time in his shop-garage where he had a substantial inventory of wood crafts.

Mr. Donald J. Terbrack, 77, a lifelong resident of Sherman Township, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2017 at McLaren Port Huron Hospital. He was born September 2, 1939 at home in Sherman Township to the late John and Cecelia (Booms) Terbrack. He was united in marriage with Nancy Koss on April 27, 1963. Don was a lifelong parishioner of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Holy Apostles Parish in Ruth. He and Nancy lived and worked a dairy farm near Ruth for many years, Don also worked for Michigan Peat Company, Stout Construction and Ruth Farmers Elevator. He sailed on Great Lakes cargo ships for two years before being drafted into the U. S. Army, March 1945. His basic training was at Camp Gordon, Georgia. He was deployed via ship to Nagasaki Japan as part of the U. S. post war occupation forces where he was part of the Heavy Auto Maintenance Company #3607. While stationed there, Laverne traveled with other soldiers to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb sites to view the destruction firsthand. After his discharge from the army at age 20, he went to Detroit and completed a six-week course with Ford Motor Company in auto maintenance. After completing the course, he returned to the Thumb and worked for a car dealership. On July 1, 1948 he started work at Ruth Farmers Elevator, Machinery Division, where he retired from at age 65, after 43 years of dedicated service. On November 8, 1952 LaVerne and Regina (Jean) were married at St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church in Forestville. They built a house in Ruth in 1955, where they have lived ever since. LaVerne was actively involved in his church and community. He joined the Sherman Township Fire Department in 1955, served as Fire Chief for 16 years, and retired after 48 years of service. He was a member of St. Peter and Paul Church (now Holy Apostles Parish) in Ruth. As a member of the church, he was an usher for 34 years, served as a lay minister, and was active with the Ruth Knights of Columbus. In his community, he was involved with V.F.W. Post #5740, Huron County Council of Aging, and Triad Organization of Huron County. LaVerne and Jean enjoyed dancing. In 1960 they joined the Country Western Square Dance Club where they remained active members for over 50 years. They also enjoyed Senior Dance Club dances in Bad Axe and Sandusky. LaVerne and Jean were avid campers with their children and later on they camped for many weekend square dances throughout the State. They enjoyed playing cards, both formally in card groups and informally with family and friends. Laverne's wife and children will always remember him for his story telling, steady calmness, and general good cheer. He was always willing to help others as evidenced, for example, by the many times farmers stopped by the house after hours asking him to get them needed farm equipment parts from the Elevator.

MOODY, Virginia Lucille - Age 91, of Fenton, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2017. Virginia was born March 25, 1926 in Bucyrus, Ohio, the daughter of Clayton Edward and Margaret Anna (Schindler) Hauck. She graduated from high school in Willard, Ohio. Virginia worked as a secretary before marrying World War II veteran Evert Leroy Moody in Detroit, Michigan on September 7, 1946. They were married 47 years, until Evert passed away. They raised one son, Ronald Craig Moody, currently residing in Mayville, Michigan. Virginia loved studying her Bible, spoiling her pets, and homemaking. She was a two-time breast cancer survivor. Virginia spent the last years of her life in Fenton, Michigan, where she met many caring people. She previously resided in southeast Michigan; Dewey, Arizona; and Mayville, Michigan. Virginia made many close friends throughout her lifetime. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Shirley Youngblood, 80, of Port Austin, died May 21, 2017 at Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born on August 23, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Alvin and Margaret Traynor, Schaffstein. She and Daniel Youngblood were married on May 4, 1963 at St. Clare of Montefalco Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Park. They moved from Detroit to Port Austin in 1994. Shirley was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church of the Annunciation of the Lord Parish in Port Austin and the Ladies Holy Rosary Sodality. She was also a member of the American Legion Frank Horetski Post 499 Auxillary and the U & I Club. She enjoyed working at church functions, bingo and playing cards.

Timothy J. Koglin, 60, of Bad Axe, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2017 at Birchview Ranch in Pigeon under Compassus Hospice care. Tim was born on March 21, 1957 in Harbor Beach to the late Albert and Marion (Newman) Koglin. Timothy worked at Thumb Industries for over 20 years. He enjoyed bowling, painting, coloring, drawing, going to the movie theater, shopping, eating out, and watching boats in Caseville and Sebewaing. Tim also participated in the Special Olympics. His favorite meal was hamburger, fries and root beer.

Elaine DeGrandt, age 89, of Bad Axe, passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2017. Elaine was born on April 30, 1928 in Bay City, daughter of the late Ellis and Nellie (Coppinger) Marks. She married Henry DeGrandt on August 23, 1946 in Bay City. He preceded her in death on July 28, 1974. Elaine and Henry purchased the family farm from Henry’s parents. They farmed it together and raised their children there. She resided there until the time of her death. The centennial farm has been in the DeGrandt family since 1916. Elaine enjoyed the outdoors, deer hunting with her sons, teaching Sunday school in her younger years, dancing and bowling. She worked as a nurse’s aide at the Huron Medical Care Facility for 13 years and then enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels for many years. Elaine had a love for animals, especially her current pet Delilah, a miniature poodle. Most of all, Elaine loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Jacob L. Moolhuizen age 34, of Auburn Hills, formerly of Port Austin, died unexpectedly Sunday morning, May 14, at his home.. He was born September 6, 1983, in Pontiac and moved to Huron County in his youth with his family. He was a graduate of North Huron High School, class of 2002. After high school, he moved to the metro area near Detroit where he worked construction, mostly heavy equipment. Work was his hobby, putting in 70 hour work weeks. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 324.

She graduated in 1951 from Bad Axe High School. She married Edward Gilbert on June 19, 1970 in Bad Axe; he preceded her in death on June 29, 2007. Doris retired from EDS at the GM Tech Center. Muriel Patricia "Pat" Newbery, age 95 of Pigeon (formerly of Caseville), died early Monday morning, May 8, 2017 at Courtney Manor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, Bad Axe. Born in Port Credit, Ontario on February 13, 1922, she was the daughter of William Patrick and Winifred (Tracey) Conroy, and graduated in 1938 from Busch High School, Centerline. On July 26, 1940 she was united in marriage to Robert V. Newbery at the Centerline Presbyterian Church. Pat and Bob had two children, Herbert Donald and Janet Ann, and made their home in Hazel Park for 35 years. Bob preceded her in death on July 31, 1999. Pat worked part time for the Hazel Park Board of Education; then at the City of Hazel Park as an accountant from 1957 until her retirement in 1975, when they made Caseville their permanent home. She was a life member of the Caseville Library Club. She was a member of Caseville United Methodist Church for 25 years and was church treasurer for 12 years. As a member of Pigeon First United Methodist Church, Pat was an active member of the United Methodist Women. She also loved to bowl, sometimes in three leagues. She was an avid knitter, crocheter, and Detroit Tiger fan.

Miller, Darwin “ Dodie” Port Hope, Michigan Loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2017. Dodie was born on September 11, 1952 in Harbor Beach, Michigan. He married Rosemarie Koglin, his loving wife of 46 years, on September 12, 1970. Dodie worked at Active Industries/Tower Automotive for 23 years and then for Stone Transport for 8 years. He was a lifelong farmer and worked also for his neighbor, Tom Smaglinski. Dodie enjoyed life, going on casino trips, fishing, hunting, shooting trap and skeet, riding motorcycles, cutting wood and grass, farming. Dodie was always the first to offer a helping hand to friends and neighbors whenever they needed help. He was a member of the Grindstone/Port Hope Sportsman Club for 40 years, the Upper Thumb Traveling Trap League for more than 30 years and also a member of the Harbor Beach Gun Club for 10 years.
