Harbor Beach Captures First MHSAA Football State Title with 35-10 Win Over Hudson.
Harbor Beach (13-1) claimed its first-ever Michigan high school football championship Friday at Ford Field, defeating two-time champion Hudson 35-10 in the Division 8 final.
Overcoming the season-opening injury to star running back Sloan Klaski, the Pirates relied on a suffocating defense and explosive offense to dominate the Aggies (13-1). Harbor Beach held Hudson - which averaged over 40 points in eight games this season - to just 291 total yards and made critical goal-line stands in the first and third quarters.
Junior quarterback Eli Kraft threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns (54 yards to Aaron Ginther, 69 yards to Travis Essenmacher) while rushing for another score. The Pirates' defense, led by Josh Keyes, Brandon Oswald, and DeAndre Ridner, repeatedly stonewalled Hudon inside the 5-yard line.
Just two years removed from a third straight losing season, Harbor Beach completed a remarkable turnaround, setting a school record for wins and bringing the small Lake Huron community of 1,600 its first state football crown.
