Today is Election Day so the polls will be open until 8 p.m., and that has some worried in a Sanilac County township.
During the October meeting of the Speaker Township Board of Trustees, Clerk Michelle Brown expressed concerns about the safety of the election workers who will be at the polls until 8 p.m., and longer until votes have been recorded.
Besides having a person volunteer to be at the poll, the township also hired a security officer who works at both a local hospital and the St. Clair County to spend the day poll, and will be paid $40 an hour.
Grant money that was received from the Center for Tech and Civic Life.
According to the minutes from the meeting, "our security risk is very high and we are working with Hi-Tech to address concerns."
Township officials could not be reached for comment on what has them concerned.
The board also previously approved having Hi-Tech install an Entra-Passs system on the front door, and the locks were changed and/or repaired on all of the doors in the hall.
The township received two grants.
A $5,000 grant from Center for Tech and Civic Life, and a $6,000 grant from A More Responsive Government.
The board used the grant funds to cover the cost of a security guard and security upgrades to the facility.
