New Michigan Law Makes Tattoo Numbing Creams Illegal

A new Michigan law in effect as of September 11th, 2025, prohibits tattoo parlors from applying or working on skin treated with numbing creams or sprays, unless the client presents a valid prescription from a Michigan-licensed doctor.

The rule, issued by the state Health Department, aims to address safety concerns surrounding topical anesthetic use during tattoo procedures.

Those who arrive with numbing products already on their skin will be rescheduled, and artists who violate the rule risk losing their license.

The measure was prompted by health risks linked to improper use of numbing agents, including the potential for severe side effects when applied to broken skin.?
