A recent study by the Michigan State Housing Authority (MSHDA) showed there is a desperate need for at least 190,000 single-family housing units.
The need for more housing was also underscored again during presentations by the East Michigan Council of Governments (EMCOG).
Sanilac County authorities, the county's Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (BRA), and the village of Peck are responding to the need for more housing.
In a collaborative effort, Sanilac County Commissioners, the county's BRA and Peck are in the process of gathering housing market data.
Peck has taken the lead on that effort by bringing $50,000 in funding from the Office of Rural Prosperity, and $16,000 in funds from the BRA to fund the project. That funding is expected to reduce the financial burden on local municipalities to about $2,400.
The total cost of the housing study is expected to be about $68,400.
Some of the benefits of doing the study is having a comprehensive data collection, input from stakeholders such as real estate agents, housing authorities, and government offices; and working together to lower costs.
When that aspect of the study is done, the long range benefits of the information that is gathered will help with strategic planning, informed development of specific needs, and recognizing gaps.
The study is also expected to help with economic growth by understanding what is needed, more community services, and the need for seasonal housing, family housing, and senior care needs.
