With the start of a new year only a few weeks away, Tuscola County Commissioners reviewed finances and approved some money transfers during their last meeting.
Managed Assigned Counsel Geoffrey Stuart told commissioners that the money they would be getting from the state will be less for the coming year.
One of the reasons for less funding is the state's stance on witness costs and training.
The state will provide $2,129,768 to the courts and the county share to pay will be $255,199, according to Stuart, who noted that the county's share of the cost has stayed the same for several years.
When commissioners asked about ways to lower cost, they learned that surrounding counties pay a lot less, which was a concern.
Because they had questions, commissioners asked Stuart for more information on the differences between Tuscola and the other counties regarding financing.
He is expected to be back with more information at the 8 a.m. Nov. 13 meeting.
In other money matters, commissioners approved transferring millage funds to other county operations.
Tuscola County's Medical Care Chief Executive Officer Cody Rabideau requested a draw of $125,951 for some improvements to the facility.
The plan is to spend: $25,000 for new flooring, $43,278 to replace aging resident lifts, and to upgrade the phone system.
To start the phone project, Rabideau asked for a downpayment of $56,572, and he received the funding for that also.
The road commission's Finance Director Mike Tuckey asked for and received a transfer of $323,880 for bridges, and a transfer of millage money of $1,886,970 for roads.
