The Michigan Senate has advanced a bipartisan plan to raise hunting and fishing license fees for the first time in a decade, generating an estimated $30 million to support wildlife and natural resource programs.
Sponsored by Sen. John Cherry of Flint and Sen. Jon Bumstead of Norton Shores, Senate Bill 276 responds to rising costs and a decline in outdoor participation that have strained Department of Natural Resources funding.
The bill retains discounted licenses for youth and seniors, drops the antlerless deer license to $5, and introduces a "Complete License" covering multiple hunting and fishing privileges. It also calls for a review of Michigan's deer and elk baiting ban, expands management options for hunters, and makes the pheasant stamp program permanent.
The measure now moves to the Michigan House for consideration.
