A recent hour workshop gave participants a basic concept of what it is like to live in poverty.
The workshop was before the recent federal shutdown of services which impacted several services low income households depend on to meet basic needs.
Poverty in some of the Thumb's counties is more and/or matches state and national levels of poverty.
The poverty rate in Huron County is 12.1 percent with approximately 15.2 percent of the county's children living in low-income households.
The poverty rate in Sanilac County is 14 percent with approximately 19.7 percent of the children in the county living in low-income households.
According to reports, the median household income in both Huron and Sanilac counties is well below the state average of $59,074.
Living below the poverty level makes it even more difficult to try to balance making a living, childcare, and finding affordable housing.
Those who participated in the workshop that was done in coordination with the Huron and Sandusky Intermediate school districts and the Thumb Opioid Response Consortium were a cross segment of educators.
