During the winter weather months in the U. S., you will see plenty of safety reminders released, usually containing tips on how to remain safe while you travel during inclement weather. Most folks live within a short drive away from their destinations, with work and home being the main reasons to brave the cold. One of the demographics that could most effectively deploy these tips are; Teen Drivers.
Within the last few weeks, Michigan's weather and poor road conditions have already been the cause of multiple slide-offs, wrecks and even some fatalities. Teens generally do not have much real-world driving experience before they receive their licenses. So, for some drivers on the road during winter, it truly IS their first Rodeo!
A recent near miss between a Michigan State Police Trooper and an 18-year-old man from Marlette shows how quickly a routine drive can turn into a life changing event. In the DashCam video, the teen is seen traveling towards the trooper headed in the opposite direction on M-46 (near Plain Rd.). The oncoming vehicle starts to swerve, caused by the teen striking the deer with his truck. Ending up crossing the centerline into the path of the trooper, the teen's pickup was narrowly missed by the Trooper before coming to a stop in the ditch. Thankfully, no injuries were reported to the teen and his two occupants.
While driving, please mitigate distractions. In their post about the incident, the MSP stated "You never know what to expect when driving". You can greatly reduce the inherent risk of driving by driving for the conditions, not driving under the influence of substances and ensuring your attention remains on the road at all times.
