Every January, the United States observes National Human Trafficking Awareness Month to bring attention to the often unseen crime, and educate the public on how to spot and prevent it.
Human Trafficking is a modern day form of slavery that uses force, fraud or other means to exploit individuals for labor or commercial sex. Michigan is a hotspot for human trafficking, due to the proximity with the border of Canada, as well as the extensive highway system. Michigan also has a higher percentage of those more "vulnerable" to trafficking, such as homeless youth, undocumented immigrants, and those struggling with poverty or financial hardship.
One of the best ways to combat Human Trafficking is to spot it before it even happens. Or t the very least, understanding the signs could be what saves someone's life. So, what should we be looking for?
* Individuals showing signs of fear, physical abuse and/or malnutrition
* Someone being controlled by another person, or not able to communicate or speak freely
* Working excessively long hours without any pay
* Someone who lacks identification or any personal belongings
