Radon, if you are not familiar with it, is the colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that comes as a bi-product of decaying uranium in the soil and water, and is actually the leading cause of lung cancer in individuals that do not smoke. This natural breakdown of uranium can occur almost anywhere, but can commonly take place in the rocks and soil beneth buildings or other construction, or even dissolved in the water supply and released into the air. Building materials themselves, such as granite, can be a cause of Radon being present in your home.
Side effects can take place too long after exposure to rely on symptoms alone to prompt you to test for Radon. So, the Huron County Health Department is using this month, which is Radon Action Month here in Michigan, to spread the word about testing for Radon in your home. With elevated levels of Radon being found in about a quarter of homes in the state, surpassing the federally accepted 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of air present; what can be done?
Well, In the Month of January only, home testing kits are available for free from the Huron County Health Department found on 1142 South Van Dyke Rd. in Bad Axe. Kits can also be grabbed from Mclaren Thumb Region's lobby, on Tuesdays and Thursday's (for the rest of this month only). Kits obtained outside of this awareness month are relatively inexpensive, and will run you around $10 per kit.
**Keep in mind, the average radon level in homes in the U.S. are 1.3pCi/L, while any level between 2.0 and 4.0 per liter is reccomended to clear your home**
